The 2020 Chardonnay Trout Gulch Vineyard is laser focused and vibrant, as it is in its best years. Crushed rocks, mint, white pepper, lemon peel and white flowers all race out of the glass. Bright saline notes extend the finish effortlessly. The 2020 is very nicely done, and also a great example of this Santa Cruz Mountains site.

The Watson Ranch vineyard is perched on a steep hillside overlooking the San Pablo Bay in the southernmost end of the Napa Valley. The vineyard can be seen on the top of the hill just east of the Green Island Vineyard which we sourced fruit from 2007-09. Exposed and austere, the Watson Ranch is a wind whipped site planted in 1993 by the talented grower Salvador Ramos on marine deposits over limestone.

The 2020 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict captures all the magic of this iconic Sta. Rita Hills site. Ample, creamy and inviting, the 2020 is beautifully textured from start to finish. Apricot, lemon confit, white flowers, mint and marzipan build as the 2020 opens with a bit of air. Arnot-Roberts pulls fruit from the old-vine section of S&B, which was planted in 1971 with own-rooted vines.

Blackberry, black cherry and baking spice on the nose. Full-bodied with firm, grippy tannins. Dried herbs and spice blend with a bit of cedar and pine. Earthy and savory, but still full of fruit. Well balanced with very good intensity. This will do well with some age.

Ground black and white-pepper aromas jump out of the glass with pine and red fruit as well. Medium-to full-bodied with firm tannins. Such a lovely toasted expression of ground and whole spice, bark and crushed blackberry. What a tasty wine! Drink or hold. Tasted from a magnum.
