You know what they say, the great producers shine in difficult years. The 2017 vintage was challenging in the Langhe characterized by extreme heat and drought. Nonetheless, Luigi and Lorenzo Scavino, the father and son team of Azelia, managed to produce fresh beautiful wines including today’s feature, their 2017 Barbera d’Alba Punta, hailing from vines more than 60 years old.

Since older vines have deeper roots enabling them to reach water far in the ground, these vines didn’t suffer through the high heat and dry conditions as experienced by younger ones.

Azelia’s barbera is from old vines located in the southwest facing Punta vineyard, which sits on top of a hill in Castiglione Falletto, a site typically reserved for nebbiolo. Only an average of 6700 bottles are made each year.

Vinous, September 2021

The 2017 Barbera d'Alba Punta is soft, racy and engaging. Black cherry, plum, spice, cedar and tobacco flesh out nicely. The 2017 is quite soft and fruity, and yet remains very much medium-bodied in feel. Drink it over the next few years.
