Vinous on AZELIA

Luigi Scavino has been crafting gorgeous Barolos for many years, but over the last few vintages Scavino and his son Lorenzo have taken quality to another level, which is obviously great to see. One of the things I love most about the Azelia Barolos is their ability to deliver pleasure throughout their entire lives, something that very few other Barolos are capable of, at least to this degree.

Margheria is an MGA in Serralunga, where Azelia occupies the higher westerly aspect. This makes the wine more austere in comparison to examples from other producers. Bright ruby in the glass, the scents are mostly focused on violets, with rhubarb and red berry notes. The palate is vibrant and mineral, with ripe, lavish tannins and bracing acidity. The structure and the almost-tart fruit are finely tailored. Outstanding now, but built for the long haul.

About AZELIA

If Azelia's Barolos needed to be described in a single word, that word would be 'elegant'. The wines have always been a pure expression of nebbiolo, silky textured and harmonious, never over extracted or excessively oaky. If their intrinsic balance makes them approachable when they are young, it also makes them supremely age-worthy. Azelia is unquestionably one of Langhe's best value producers.
