Wine Advocate on CATENA

Titre

I tasted a very large collection of wines from Catena Zapata. All of these wines are highly recommendable, but the wines from the Adrianna Vineyard range are truly gobsmacking good and world class.
Luis Gutiérrez, June 2018

Adrianna Vineyard

Planted at altitude (1450m/4757ft) in a quest to make fresher more structured wines, Nicolas Catena was called crazy and told that the fruit would never ripen. Undeterred he planted anyway.

Today, these wines from the Adrianna Vineyard are some of the freshest, most structured and balanced in all of Argentina.

Due to the altitude, the grapes produce dramatically thicker skins in order to protect the seeds from the sun (an adaptive evolutionary development in the quest to ensure propagation of the vine). This increases the phenolic material in the grapes substantially from those vinified at lower elevations.

The altitude also allows for huge diurnal shifts, so grapes ripen, but retain ever important acidity. The balance obtained from this freshness is exactly what Nicolas hoped when he planted the vineyard. The increase in phenolics was a beautiful surprise and the site is exceeding the Catena’s already lofty ambitions.

Wine Advocate, March 2021

The amazing 2019 White Stones Chardonnay comes from a select group of 27 rows planted on lot I of the Adrianna Vineyard, and the composition of those rows is soil with white oval stones covered by gravel. The Adrianna Vineyard is planted at an altitude of almost 1,500 meters above sea level, in the district of Gualtallary in Tupungato. The stony soil prevents deep root growth, providing optimum drainage. This soil, which is very poor in organic matter, contributes to the vines' permanent stress conditions. The cool nights allow for very slow ripening, optimal acid retention and low yields.

James Suckling, April 2021

Honeysuckle, ripe pear and some dried apple. So perfumed. Full-bodied with incredible intensity and length. So much green-apple character and lots of flowers. Dried mango, too. The touch of flor growth in the barrel gives this unique character. Goes on for minutes on the finish. Endless, vibrant acidity. Minerally texture.

James Suckling,

This is really something. There’s purity and focus to the aromas of crushed berries, licorice and black tea, which follow through to an integrated palate of extremely fine, melted tannins that spread to the very ends of the wine. This is all about balance and length. It really is an emotional wine. Great follow-up to the 2017, which was also 100 points
