Wine Advocate on CATENA

Titre

I tasted a very large collection of wines from Catena Zapata. All of these wines are highly recommendable, but the wines from the Adrianna Vineyard range are truly gobsmacking good and world class.
Luis Gutiérrez, June 2018

Catena's Adrianna Vineyard

Nicolas Catena was called crazy and told that the fruit would never ripen when he planted at an altitude of 1450m/4757ft in a quest to make fresher more structured wines. Undeterred he planted anyway.

Today, these wines from the Adrianna Vineyard are some of the freshest, most structured and balanced in all of Argentina.

The Adrianna Vineyard is like owning an entire village in Burgundy and the small block wines below are the Catenas' attempt to find their Grand Crus. While we have used Burgundy as a reference to the Catenas' quest to divine the distinctiveness of these small blocks of terroir we shouldn’t lose site of the fact that the terroir here is the sum of all its parts: Altitude, intense sun, complex soils, complex microbial life -- and that these conditions result in wines that are distinctly Argentine.

The scale of excellence here is astounding. Enjoy!

James Suckling, February 2022

Fascinating nose of white lavender, lemon, pineapple, green apple, thyme, rosemary, sourdough, almond and oyster shell. It’s medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and a tense, spicy palate. So much flavor and fragrance. Incredibly expressive, with evolving layers of fresh fruit, spices, flowers and herbs.

Wine Advocate, November 2022

The old River Stones has seen its name simplified to 2019 Adrianna Vineyard River. This is an exceptional vintage for this bottling, from a very stony part of the large Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary, close to the dry river. It's the equivalent to the White Stones white, with a north-facing exposure, the warmer exposure, which in cooler years like 2019 works nicely. The wine has harmony and subtleness, insinuating violets and wet stones, with a rare combination of power and elegance, with minerality and spice, precise, focused and harmonious. The tannins are abundant but very fine and ripe with a chalky sensation in the finish. It has 13.8% alcohol and very good freshness, acidity and healthy parameters. 5,520 bottles were filled in December 2020.
