Tim Atkin MW on CATENA
|
|
“Bodega Catena Zapata is a driving force in Argentine winemaking. A winery that played a pivotal role in resurrecting Malbec's fortunes, pushing Mendoza's vineyards higher into the Andean foothills, and delving deeply into the country's many terroirs. The family even founded the Catena Institute of Wine to scientifically examine every aspect of the local soils, rocks and microorganisms and their effect on the vines.”

Catena's Appelation Wines
Catena's appellation wines are akin to Burgundy's village wines. Like their French counterparts, the towns lend their names to the historic vineyards that surround them and represent a distinct sub-region in the Mendoza province.

Luján de Cuyo Vineyard (950 m/3117 ft)
The Luján de Cuyo appellation is known for its clay-rich soils and cool nights. Deeply aromatic with expressive citrus and peach with a rich and mineral finish. This blend of Semillon and Chenin Blanc is Argentina’s century-old traditional white wine.

Vinous, August 2022
The 2021 Catena Appellation Lujan de Cuyo White Clay is a blend of 55% Sémillon and 45% Chenin from Luján de Cuyo, a third aged for up to seven months in barrels. Golden yellow in the glass. The Sémillon dominates the nose with notes of honey and flint accompanied by floral aromas. In the mouth, it’s tense and linear with good energy and flavor, as in a structured, compact palate. A style making a stand against commercial trends.

Here, the sandy-loam soils and mountainous climate yield a wine with concentrated ripe red berries, a touch of eucalyptus and black pepper, robust tannins and smooth lengthy finish.

Wine Advocate, November 2023
The peppery, spicy ad elegant 2019 Appellation San Carlos Cabernet Franc is fresh, varietal, nuanced and complex while keeping the alcohol to a moderate 13.6%, which makes it attractive and easy to drink, with nice balance and very fine tannins. I usually like the precision and symmetry in this lively wine that has a velvety mouthfeel.

Vinous, November 2022
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Catena Appellation Agrelo from Luján de Cuyo was aged for eight months in a third new barrels. Garnet red in hue. The nose offers notes of roasted red pepper, ash and ripe blackcurrant along with hints of spice. Broad and expansive in the mouth, the mild palate presents grippy tannins that channel and structure the flow into the pleasant, lengthy, bold finish
