Vinous on DOMAINE NICO
|
|
Founded by Laura Catena, Domaine Nico makes Pinot Noir using grapes from family vineyards in Tupungato, Uco Valley. The winery is located in Gualtallary and overseen by the oenologist Roy Urvieta. Their five reds, which are grown at altitudes ranging between 3,900 and 4,900 feet above sea level in different soil types, have raised the bar for the variety in Argentina.

Tim Atkin MW, 2024
Histoire d’A showcases the quality of the Adrianna Vineyard, using grapes planted at
1,350 metres, next to the Huentela River. Fermented with 40% whole bunches, it’s a bright,
detailed, limestone-influenced style with flavours of redcurrant, pomegranate and goji berry,
and savoury, fine-grained tannins.

Descorchados, 2024
This is the first year that 20% of the wine was aged in foudres, while the rest went through barrels, with a total of 10 months of aging, four months less than the 2021 vintage. And that's clear in the expression of the the fresh and juicy fruit, as is usual from this parcel, according to winemaker Roy Urvieta. It has very fine, sharp tannins, with oaky notes behind it, like soft background music. Grand Mère comes from a small two-hectare parcel in Villa Bastías, in southern Tupungato, and about 1,120 meters above sea level. It was planted in 2013.

James Suckling, May 2024
Scented grapefruit, red berries, minerals, freshly sliced strawberries and moss. Really pure, bright, tense and ethereal in form. Extremely long, juicy and so transparent. Beautiful and impeccable. 40% whole clusters. Drinkable now, but better from 2026.

Wine Advocate, March 2021
The highest vines in Gualtallary (at an impressive 1,500 meters above sea level) have produced an impressive 2018 Le Paradis Pinot Noir, which is nuanced, insinuating and detailed with some stony austerity and a sense of inner strength and energy that is gobsmacking. It comes from 1.1 hectares planted in 2011 with Dijon's clone 667 that was micro-vinified in 12 separate fermentations in stainless steel and rolling barrels. The wine matured in French barriques for 18 months. It has pungent and deep flavors and great precision. 2,340 bottles were filled in December 2019.
