Single Parcel Pinot Noirs from the High Elevations of the Uco Valley

"Domaine Nico was born from my obsession for Burgundy Pinot Noir. When I realized we could make a Pinot Noir with the classic floral aromas, minerality and elegance, we began studying the flavours of high altitude Pinot Noir from Mendoza." -- Laura Catena

The grapes for Domaine Nico come from vineyards that range in elevation from 1120 to 1500 metres (3675 to 4921 ft) above sea level. With very limited production, the collection is only available in four other countries: Argentina, Belgium, Denmark, and the US. We're pleased to be the exclusive agents in Canada to offer these exciting wines, the world's first extreme high altitude single parcel Pinot Noirs.

Wine Advocate, November 2022

The 2021 Histoire d’A Pinot Noir comes from the Monasterio subzone of Gualtallary (still not officially approved) at 1,350 meters in altitude. It fermented with 50% full clusters and aged exclusively in used oak. The wine has a pale and delicate color and a delicate, floral and perfumed nose, with less oak than previous years. It has moderate 12.5% alcohol and a very fine thread in the palate with very fine tannins. It's an improvement over previous years. 5,400 bottles were filled in August 2022.

Gismondi on Wine, October 2023

Grand Mère pinot was first planted back in 2013. The 2-hectare mix of 667 and 115 clones is fermented with 20 percent whole cluster bunches before ageing 14 months in 15 percent new French oak, plus a combination of second and third use barrels. The style is subtle and very Burgundian despite sitting 1100 metres above sea level. Red fruits, cranberries, cherries, and floral notes dominate the nose. The palate is similar, with more brown spice, black pepper, and a dusting of wet stones. Fresh with perfectly managed tannin, it is another drink-or-hold situation, but this will easily live through 2028. A serious wine ready to take on some duck confit.

Wine Advocate, November 2022

The 2021 Grand Père Pinot Noir comes from the same property as Grand Mere in Villa Bastías. But this part of the plot has a northern exposure, the soil has more sand and less stones and it doesn't have the influence from the river like the Grand Mère does. So, the exposure is warmer, but the soils are cooler, if you like, and the wines are balanced. 2021 was a cooler year, and the wine is impressive, marked by the climate from the year, perfumed and elegant with notes of orange peel and an ethereal palate with very good balance and subtleness through very fine tannins. Very supple. It has moderate 12.5% alcohol, and they used more full clusters. 14,400 bottles were filled in August 2022.

James Suckling, April 2020

Aromas of violets, cassis and blueberries sit fresh on the nose of this striking pinot noir. This has a very rich, attractively complex style with so much to offer in every regard. The palate has multiple phases of fresh, red and blue-fruit flavors with fine, layered tannins. The supple, long finish holds very focused, in alluringly spicy mode.

About DOMAINE NICO

DOMAINE NICO

Domaine Nico was born from the Catena family’s affinity to the great wines of Burgundy and was inspired by Laura’s teenage years in France where she first learned of regionality. The journey began in the early 1990’s when her father Nicolás planted Pinot Noir Dijon clones in the high-altitude vineyards in Mendoza, located in three different areas in Tupungato in the Uco Valley.
