Terry Theise on PIERRE GIMONNET & FILS
|
|
"I think I love Gimonnet’s wines as I do because, even at their most intense, they whisper and croon, and I enter the silvery world they offer."

James Suckling, December 2021
Tightly wound and intensely mineral, this is a very serious and concentrated vintage champagne that just needs a bit more time in the bottle for the still discreet citrus notes to unfold. However, there are already so many layers of flavor on the tightly focused palate and at the long, very exciting finish.

James Suckling, July 2022
Very deep and concentrated with fantastic mineral freshness lifting the substantial body, this is a sparkling chardonnay masterpiece. Great candied-citrus and chalky complexity at the expansive finish, yet this remains so pure and straight. From vines planted in 1911 and 1982. Disgorged in April, 2021. Drink or hold.

Jeb Dunnuck, November 2022
The 2015 Champagne Grand Cru Special Club Chouilly Brut is savory in its attack, with tarragon and fresh herbs, lime zest, and saline earth. With its ripeness and rounded feel, it is approachable now. Drink 2022-2034.

Jeb Dunnuck, November 2023
Entirely from Premier and Grand Cru villages of the Côte des Blancs, the 2017 Champagne Blanc De Blancs Cuvée Fleuron Brut is a bright yellow hue and is compact and powerful, yet crystalline, with notes of crystalized ginger, fresh pear, honey, and lemon candies. Long on the palate, it’s elegant with ripe concentration, a core of fresh acidity, and a pristine finish. A superb wine from this vintage, it’s great now and will drink well over the next 6-8 years.

Gismondi on Wine, November 2023
Didier, part of the third generation of the Gimonnet family, oversees the winemaking of their family winery, based in Cuis, in the heart of the Côtes de Blancs. This wine, like all of their chardonnay-centric wines, is laser focused. According to Didier, he wants a rosé that tastes like a blanc de blancs with colour. "Powerful chardonnay." It certainly succeeds. This bottling sources fruit from Cramant, Oger, and Chouilly, adding 5% Bouzy still pinot noir. This pale-hued rosé champagne is as light as a rosé champagne can be, with tight wild strawberry, subtle raspberry, pink florals, crisp green apple, white grapefruit rind, and subtle fresh green herbs, along a sleek and narrow palate. As always, this tastes the most chardonnay a rosé champagne can be, and is so very singular and charming for it. Enjoy, liberally, if you love chardonnay but want to pair it with wild mushrooms / salmon canapés.

James Suckling, July 2022
This delightful Blanc de Blancs marries excellent depth of character – all the citrus, crisp pear and floral aromas of chardonnay – with charm. Properly dry, but very harmonious, thanks to the excellent balance of citrusy freshness and creaminess. Long, clean finish, accentuated by the lively mousse.

James Suckling, February 2021
A very rich Blanc de Blancs champagne that doesn’t taste bone-dry, thanks to the stunning harmony. Tons of dried pear and apple character is married to a wonderfully creamy and silky palate, the chalky minerality building beautifully at the long, refined finish. A cuvée based on wines from the Grand Cru villages of Chouilly (one third), Cramant (one third) and Oger (10%), plus the 1er Cru villages of Cuis (20%) and Vertus (2%).
