Wine Advocate on LANGMEIL
|
|
From top to bottom, Langmeil—run by brothers Paul (winemaking) and James (sales and marketing) Lindner—is hitting on all cylinders…, Hangin' Snakes, Three Gardens and Offspring, represent great values, while even the very top-end stuff, The Freedom 1843 and Pure Eden Shirazes, are reasonably priced in the context of old-vine, cellar-worthy Barossa reds. These are big, bold wines that don't skimp on flavor or texture yet show a remarkable amount of elegance and nuance.

James Suckling, September 2020
This is a very fresh, raspberry-scented grenache that has a lacy, tangy and fresh feel on the palate. Very drinkable. A blend of 91% grenache, 7% counoise and 2% carignan. Drink now. Screw cap.

Wine Advocate, August 2021
The dark-purple 2018 Jackaman's Cabernet Sauvignon—sourced from vineyards in Lyndoch and Light Pass—is a marvel of cassis-fruit purity, framed by barely detectable French oak (51% new). Medium to full-bodied, it's supple enough to be approachable now, but it really deserves four or five years of cellaring, just to allow the flavors to evolve from primary simplicity into secondary complexity. Rich and velvety on the finish, it appears capable of up to two decades of positive evolution.

Wine Advocate, August 2021
The beauty of these relocated old vines is that they never seem to yield a wine that's too ripe or too heavy. The 2018 Orphan Bank Shiraz offers up scents of red raspberries and blueberries alongside hints of mint. The oak (all French oak hogsheads, 47% new) is well-balanced and integrated into the wine, barely noticeable in this full-bodied beauty. Supple and charming, it's a very pretty Shiraz—maybe not the biggest or baddest beast—but remarkably elegant and long-lasting on the finish.

The Fifth Wave Grenache 2019

The Fifth Wave is Langmeil’s most treasured Old Vine Garden Grenache and is dedicated to the fifth generation of the Lindner family. The vineyard was planted in 1973 and serves as a call to arms, to preserve, promote and protect the best of the Barossa as well as an oft overlooked variety. Juicy red berries and dark cherries flow through the palate, with the soft, sweet fruit balancing with pepper and briary spices. The finish lingers on a fruity and spicy note with typical chalky yet fine-grained tannins.
