Wine and Spirits Magazine, April 2022

Siena native Bernardino Sani began his wine career with a cellar internship at Argiano in 2002, and returned some ten years later, taking over as CEO in 2014. He has overseen a conversion to organic viticulture and an expansion of the cellar, with a shift toward use of larger Slavonian oak casks for the aging of the Brunellos. The benefits of these changes are apparent in this Brunello which, despite the warm and dry 2017 vintage, offers scents of rose petal and violet that are precise and lifted, with a cool mineral tone that energizes its vivid red and black cherry flavors layered with notes of licorice and tarragon. The wine gains energy over several days while maintaining that firm minerality that makes this wine so appealing.

So much crushed-stone character here with citrus and black-cherry aromas. Medium-bodied with iodine and oyster-shell undertones to the blue fruit. Lemon rind at the end.

Wine Advocate, February 2022

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is beautifully bright and stitched up with extreme focus and sharpness. Sangiovese has this gorgeous ability to show linearity and lift, but it remains elegant and tight at the same time. This wine accomplishes all of this, and that's saying a lot given the heat and drought of this vintage. The acidity is bright and the finish is long and smooth with citrusy end notes of blood orange followed by wild rose and lilac. Fruit comes from a 4.5-hectare site with sand and galestro soils. Production is exactly 15,014 bottles. Maria Laura Vacca Brunelli and her team harvested about one week early in 2017 to capture that varietal freshness.

Wine Advocate, December 2007

The 2004 Barolo San Rocco, from a vineyard in Serralunga, is an explosive, structured wine bursting with black cherries, violets, menthol and tar. Full-bodied and ample on the palate, it possesses outstanding balance and an utterly engaging personality that makes it an absolute joy to taste. The San Rocco is always the most complete of the Azelia Barolos, and it is a wine I seek out in nearly every vintage. A recent bottle of the 2003 was also superb. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2024.

Readers looking for a first-rate Barolo producer whose pricing has remained very fair need look no further than the wines of Azelia and proprietor Luigi Scavino. These are among my favorite wines to drink, especially in restaurants, where they don’t suffer from the larger markups that accompany some of the region’s better known bottlings.

Vinous, April 2012

The 2008 Barolo Bricco Fiasco is a big, serious wine endowed with layers of black fruit, iron, smoke, licorice and tar. Some of the brighter, higher-toned aromas that are often present in this vineyard are missing in 2008. Instead readers will find a big, full-bodied Barolo graced with exceptional overall balance and tons of energy. The energy and focus of the virile finish is something to behold. The Bricco Fiasco was aged in French oak barrels, 20% new.
