In the late nineties, some of the highest quality old vine grapes in Mendoza owned by small, independent, multi-generation family growers were sold in bulk to big wineries. Growers didn’t trust the big wineries and wineries believed growers wouldn’t want to reduce yields and cared about volume over quality. It was widely believed in Argentina that great wines could not be made from purchased grapes.
They were wrong.
Laura Catena was convinced that great wines can be made from these small family-owned vineyards. They were some of the most precious old vines in Mendoza sitting at 3000 to 5000 feet above sea level. In 1999, Luca Winery was born. Laura is incredibly proud of the growers and their beautiful old vineyards. They fully embrace the concept of doing everything for the sake of quality and concentration: low yields, harvesting lot by lot, and water restriction… Luca wines are a labour of love and made only when they’re able to vinify the quality of fruit that meet their standards. Total production remains limited.
Limited time offers ends June 29, 2023.
