Jeb Dunnuck on DOMAINE SANTA DUC

Titre

The young yet obviously talented Benjamin Gras continues to make an elegant, beautifully balanced style of wine from this benchmark estate in Gigondas, which now also produces a handful of terrific Châteauneuf du Pape. He’s made the most of the 2018 vintage, and these are impressive wines.

Joe Czerwinski, October 2020

From the lightest, sandiest soils in the Gras Châteauneuf stable, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Saintes Vierges is a blend of 80% Grenache, 18% Mourvèdre and 2% Cousoise. Befitting its origins, it's the most perfumed of the three wines this year, with floral, rose-like notes, a veritable potpourri of spice and herb shadings and a vibrant core of red berries. It's labeled (like the others) at 14% alcohol but feels lighter on the palate, soaring in silky arches of intermingled red berries and delicate tannins, then lingering elegantly on the finish.

Jeb Dunnuck, November 2021

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Le Pied De Baud offers a deeper purple/ruby hue as well as a ripe, more up-front bouquet of red and blue fruits, ground pepper, violets, and more minerality, which comes through more on the palate. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and structured, give bottles a few years and enjoy over the following decade or more. This cuvée comes from the pebbly soils of the Pied de Baud lieu-dit, was partially destemmed, and is 80% Grenache and 10% each of Cinsault and Mourvèdre.

Stylish and silky, relying on higher-toned red currant, cherry and raspberry fruit aromas and flavors, with red tea, savory and subtle mineral details throughout. Features a late echo of worn leather, which adds nice contrast on the finish. Grenache and Syrah. Best from 2023 through 2038. 400 cases made, 200 cases imported.

Decanter, October 2020

Palate coating fruit and very fine tannins in abundance. A highly structural wine, where the acidity, tannin and alcohol are really to the fore, the fruit buried within. I expect it to take on fruit weight over time however and grow into the structure. Full-bodied, fresh, textural and highly fragrant. Co-planted on limestone marls behind the village. 60% whole bunch, aged in Stockinger foudres except for 20% that is aged in terracotta amphorae.

This sports a fun tumble of cassis, cherry paste and raspberry coulis notes, while red licorice, roasted applewood and tar accents fill in. Has range and energy from start to finish. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Best from 2023 through 2036. 1,600 cases made, 400 cases imported.
