Vinous on DOMAINE SANTA DUC

Titre

Yves Gras deserves full credit for pushing Domaine Santa Duc, his family’s property, into the upper tier of Gigondas, and the Southern Rhône, starting in the mid-1980s. Gras' son, Benjamin, assumed control of the domaine’s 26 hectares of vines and winemaking in 2017, pushing quality even higher. Benjamin Gras arrived at the domaine following graduating from the University of Dijon and stages at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Vega Sicilia. The sixth generation to run the estate, Benjamin Gras is a restless experimenter in the cellar. Today, he makes ample use of Stockinger foudres and clay amphoras for all of his wines. In the case of the Gigondas bottlings, the result is wines of markedly greater finesse than those of his father, which could be bruisers and sometimes excessively oaked. This winery must be counted among the handful of great producers in Gigondas.

Decanter, October 2020

Palate coating fruit and very fine tannins in abundance. A highly structural wine, where the acidity, tannin and alcohol are really to the fore, the fruit buried within. I expect it to take on fruit weight over time however and grow into the structure. Full-bodied, fresh, textural and highly fragrant. Co-planted on limestone marls behind the village. 60% whole bunch, aged in Stockinger foudres except for 20% that is aged in terracotta amphorae.

Wine Spectator, February 2022

Stylish and silky, relying on higher-toned red currant, cherry and raspberry fruit aromas and flavors, with red tea, savory and subtle mineral details throughout. Features a late echo of worn leather, which adds nice contrast on the finish. Grenache and Syrah. Best from 2023 through 2038. 400 cases made, 200 cases imported.

James Suckling, May 2023

"What a fresh and elegant Cotes-du-Rhone this is, with bright raspberry, sour cherry and candied orange aromas. Excellent balance of ripe red fruits, fine tannins and lively acidity on the focused palate. Long, surprisingly mineral finish. A cuvee of wines from Vacqueyras, Rasteau, Roaix and Seguret. Mainly grenache and syrah with a bit of mourvedre and carignan. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification."
