"Strikingly Beautiful Anniversary Wine"

In 1958, the Selvapiana estate identified Bucerchiale as one of their finest vineyards and in fact, that year the Rufina Riserva was all from this vineyard but wasn't noted as such. The grapes from Bucerchiale weren't bottled as single vineyard until 1979 after wine consultant and writer Luigi Vernolli convinced several notable Chianti producers including Selvapiana to showcase their best single vineyards.

Falstaff asserts Selvapiana's Chianti Riserva Bucerchiale "has come to define the area of Chianti Rufina," and concludes, "The 2019 is a strikingly beautiful anniversary wine. There is less extraction now, more subtlety and much nuance. Yet the essential cherry nature and wonderful sense of place of Sangiovese shines in every vintage. Happy 40th, birthday and buon compleanno Bucerchiale – here is to the next 40!"

Falstaff, January 2022

Translucent garnet a lovely, lifted note of initially juicy, ripe red cherry. With more air, dried Morello cherry is aromatic and comes with a herbal touch. The palate is wonderfully lithe: there is depth and density but an exquisite aromatic translucency that lends real elegance. The tannins are as firm as you would expect from Sangiovese, but also fine: with every crunch a new wave of Morello cherry aromas, highlighted by vivid acidity. The elegance is astonishing. Lovely and the poised opposite of a blockbuster.

About SELVAPIANA

SELVAPIANA

For decades Selvapiana’s wines have been as elegant and restrained as any in Chianti, with a great reputation for longevity. No estate in Chianti Rufina is more highly regarded. The wines are a reflection of the region’s unique environment featuring a mix of galestro, limestone and clay soils, higher altitude, and cooler microclimate than in Chianti Classico combining to produce later ripening fruit with higher acidity.
