The Fannière family have been farming in the Avize area since 1860, initially selling their grapes to large negociant houses. In 1947, Jean Fannière decided to produce his own champagne making only a few hundred bottles. By 1959, that grew to 10,000 bottles.

Denis Varnier, Jean's grandson, eventually took over the business respecting the teachings and traditional methods of his grandfather and father. Sadly, Denis passed away and his wife Valerie has been dedicated to carrying on his passion with her first solo vintage in 2017.

"True passionate and eternal lover, Denis was complete. He could not spend a day, an hour, without talking about his champagne. The passion, he transmitted it to me and I will make sure to preserve it every day. This is why I am moving forward for him, for you and for the Varnier-Fannière brand." - Valerie Varnier

Wine Advocate, March 2021

The October 2019 disgorgement of Varnier-Fannière's NV Brut Grand Cru Cuvée Saint-Denis continues to show very nicely, revealing aromas of ripe citrus fruit, yellow apple, fresh apricot, wheat toast and marzipan, followed by a full-bodied, broad and powerful palate that's elegantly fleshy and nicely concentrated. It's an expressive, textural Champagne that exemplifies the house style.

Vinous, November 2022

The NV Extra Brut Esprit de Craie sure lives up to its name. Bright, savory and intensely mineral, the Esprit de Craie is a bundle of energy. Lemon confit, graphite, dried herbs, smoke and underbrush confer tons of nuance. The Esprit de Craie is one of the most complex and distinctive Champagnes I tasted this year. There's a lot of wine here, the Esprit is austere and yet also wonderfully complex. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. Disgorged: June 7, 2022.

Jeb Dunnuck, November 2022

The NV Champagne Cuvée de Jean Fannière Origine Extra Brut is floral and pretty, with notes of fresh baked croissant, green apple, pear, and lime blossom. The palate seems to have more tension and feels more dry, with green apple skin, stony and chalky earth, and white flowers. It is still assertive in its style, but I think it has more refinement and finesse. Drink over the next 15 or so years.

About VARNIER-FANNIERE

VARNIER-FANNIERE

Varnier-Fannière's vineyard holdings are tiny, just 4 hectares of exclusively Grand Cru vineyards in Avize, Oger, Oiry and Cramant. Annual production is 3000 cases in total! Winemaking is artisanal and old-fashioned, including full malolactic fermentations and the back- straining operation of an old Coquard press. Interestingly, the wines are bottled at about 10-15% less pressure than most producers.
