Wine Enthusiast, September 2019

This intensely perfumed blend of 88% Syrah and 12% Viognier boasts sultry cassis aromas marked by bramble, black pepper, smoke and vanilla. Lavishly textured and rich, it's a hedonistic sip, with concentrated black-cherry flavors. Zesty acidity and fine-grained, gripping tannins add structure. Irresistible now for its luscious, primary fruit, it likely will develop earth and mineral intensity through 2035 and hold further still.

The 2017 Côte Rôtie Cote Blonde La Chatillonne shows the pretty, sunny style of the vintage and brings medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of black raspberries, cured meats, exotic spices, and dried flowers. It doesn’t have the density of the 2018, but it’s just a classy, complex, incredibly satisfying Côte Rôtie to drink any time over the coming 15+ years.

Moving to the Côte Rôties, the 2019 Côte Rôtie Brune Et Blonde De Vidal-Fleury is terrific, and this is a great vintage for the region. Black raspberries, dried flowers, savory meats, and spice all dominate the bouquet, and it’s medium to full-bodied, has ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. I suspect this will be a smoking value and keep for 10-12 years.

Decanter, March 2023

Round and supple with tropical aromas. Mango, peach and vanilla oak dominate the palate. This wine is opulently attractive and classic in style.

The 2018 Saint Joseph is almost Côte Rôtie-like in its black raspberry, spicy, and floral aromatics. These all carry to a medium-bodied Syrah that has silky tannins, outstanding balance, and just loads of character.

I loved the nose of the 2020 Cornas, and this pretty, medium to full-bodied Cornas shines for its purity of fruit as well as balance. It’s very floral on the nose and has plenty of more blue-tinged fruits, silky tannins, and a great finish.

About VIDAL-FLEURY

VIDAL-FLEURY

Founded in 1781, Vidal-Fleury is the oldest active winery in the Rhone Valley. Located in the heart of the Côte-Rôtie, the winery works with 16 different Appellations d’Origine Contrôlées (AOC), producing wines that are true to the terroir and ‘elevage’ of their appellations. The art of patience is a key philosophy of Vidal-Fleury who believe that wine is of course made of grapes, but also with a lot of time.
