Roche Wines

With the vines' average age of 38 years for the gewurztraminer, 29 years for the pinot gris, and 46 and 38 for the riesling roche calcaire and riesling roche granatique, respectively, Olivier Humbrecht considers the vines here from the top vineyards and grand crus young. Roche (rock) wines provide a marvelous opportunity to taste wines from top sites at reasonable prices.

James Suckling, July 2021

Next to the ripe mango and papaya fruit, the floral delicacy is equally striking in the nose. For a concentrated Alsace gewurz this is remarkably cool and bright with a level of clarity you don’t often find in this category. Delicate hint of sweetness. From biodynamically grown grapes.

James Suckling, June 2021

Here’s a stunning wine for lovers of rich Alsace pinot gris, the very lively acidity enabling it to carry a hint of sweetness without any trouble at all. Serious, chalky structure behind all the flesh and wonderfully bright citrus character at the powerful finish. From biodynamically grown grapes.

James Suckling, August 2022

This delicious gewurz is brimming with yellow-rose and ripe yellow-peach aromas, but only a hint of clove. Ripe and generous, but firmly structured, with attractive coolness and clarity. No hint of bitterness. Long, surprisingly delicate finish. Probably not yet quite at its peak. From biodynamically grown grapes.

James Suckling, June 2022

You can really smell and taste all the sunshine of the warm and dry 2020 summer in this bold and rich dry riesling, with its nose of ripe pineapple. The very fresh acidity enables it to carry easily the almost 14% of alcohol, giving the long finish impressive drive and pushing the crushed-rock minerality. Partly from the Grand Cru Brand, the rest from a nearby vineyard. From biodynamically grown grapes.

Wines from Turckheim

From the valley floor of Turckheim, the average age of the vines here are 29 years for the pinot gris, 41 years for the muscat, and 51 years for the gewurztraminer.

James Suckling, August 2022

A bold and floral gewurz with plenty of yellow-rose character. Generous and soft palate with a hint of bitterness that actually adds to the impression of freshness. With some aeration, cinnamon and allspice character develops. From biodynamically grown grapes.

James Suckling, August 2022

A real charmer! Very bright, floral, crisp and sleek for Alsace. Lively acidity (no malolactic here!) enables it to dance its way light-footedly through the long, refreshing finish that pulls you back for more. From the alluvial Herrenweg vineyard of Turckheim and overwhelmingly from muscat a petits grains, with only a small amount of muscat ottonel. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink now.

James Suckling, August 2022

This is an excellent introduction to the new, drier-style pinot gris of Alsace, thanks to its full, caramelized-pear character. Moderate richness (just 13% alcohol), plus restrained creaminess at the dry and clean finish. Mostly from the alluvial Herrenweg vineyard of Turckheim. From biodynamically grown grapes.

James Suckling, August 2022

A staggeringly youthful and expressive dry pinot gris that has tons of power, but the mango and floral-honey aromas are discreet. Rich yet focused, bone-dry palate. Breathtakingly refreshing at the salty finish, making you feel like you’ve lifted off from the surface of the earth, even if only by one millimeter. From biodynamically grown grapes.

Wine Enthusiast, November 2022

Pronounced aromas of salinity, petrol and toasted oak rise up out of the glass. This wine offers a rich, dense texture accented by fresh apple notes and a slightly petrol finish. This is a wine of intensity and body, although it does carry a bit of alcohol heat on the finish. Pair it with mild pasta dishes, fish or cheese, though, and you won't even notice.

James Suckling, July 2021

Don’t expect a lush Alsace pinot gris, because this generous and highly structured dry pinot gris is still tightly wound and the main aromas are smoke, toast, nutty apple and fresh mint. Built to last, though the long finish is supple, it’s fully packed with chalky character. Those who are patient will be richly rewarded! From biodynamically grown grapes. Better after 2021.
