The Bricco dell’Oriolo vineyard is close to Luigi’s heart as it was owned by his mother’s family. Located in the commune of Montelupo Albese , 13km south of Alba. The vines are on average 45 years old and are planted on south facing calcareous, sandy slopes. Luigi could have easily planted Nebbiolo here and charged more money for the wine, however he will never compromise quality and knows that this vineyard will produce the best Dolcetto possible. Modern and traditional techniques are used to achieve a balance of fresh fruit and terroir. Only natural yeasts are used and enzymes are never added. Fermentation is carried out using temperature controlled rotofermenters and the Dolcetto is aged in stainless steel. The wines are unfined and unfiltered and stabilisation is carried out using gravity.

Quinta do Vale Meão is One of the Greats

In the family since 1877, today Quinta do Vale Meão is owned by Francisco Javier de Olazabal. He was previously president of the highly regarded A.A. Ferreira, where the fruit of his family's estate formed the bulk of the legendary Barca Velha, first produced in 1952.

In 1998, when Francisco left Ferreira, he decided to use the grapes from his family's estate to make his own wine. The wine below is a great introduction to great Portuguese wine. Save $4 at BCLIQUOR.

The approachable, balanced and fresh red 2021 Meandro do Vale Meão showed the cooler year, coming through as elegant, fresh and long—a wine with tension, lots of fruit and more complexity and depth than what you expect in the price range. They have been harvesting earlier, doing less extraction and using 100% used barrels, some larger ones and even some oak vats, so the wine is more polished, graceful and balanced.
