Wine Advocate about GIANNI BRUNELLI
 |
This is one of my favorite estates in Montalcino. Under the leadership of Maria Laura Vacca Brunelli, the Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto team carefully farms diverse vineyard holdings between Podernovone and Le Chiuse di Sotto with different soil profiles, exposures and elevations. There are many promising elements to use when creating the final blend.

Jeb Dunnuck, February 2024 (Vintage 2019)
Displaying a deeper though youthful red hue, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino is expressive with cherry liqueur notes coaxing from the glass, and it is well-woven with plush, refined aromas of fresh leather, crushed flowers, mocha, and fresh herbs. Expressive, with focused clarity, a great, pure feel, notes of blood orange, and mineral undercurrents all weaving together through the palate, it’s long and pure, with noble structure and balanced energy. Bursting with life and refinement, it offers nervous tension and a lingering perfume of dried apricot on the finish. At this youthful stage, there’s a hint of oak spice that frames the wine beautifully, but it demands cellaring to come together further. This is going to be one to cellar and drink over the coming decades

Jeb Dunnuck, February 2024 (Vintage 2022)
Vibrant red, the 2022 Rosso Di Montalcino takes on aromas of grenadine, apricot, tangerine, and pressed flowers. This medium-bodied Rosso remains pure and focused, with lovely balance in its fruit. It has fine tannins and is graceful, with a refined texture on the palate. Harmonious in its feel, it is fantastically balanced and is going to have a wide drinking window over the coming 10 years.

Wine Advocate, December 2023 (Vintage 2019)
This wine offers lifted fruit with popping cherry, blackcurrant and sour crab apple. This level of fruit brightness is not easy to maintain in a wine that ages for five years before its commercial release. The folks at Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto do a fine job. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino delivers balanced oak renderings with exotic spice and dried chili flake. The wine has a beautiful nose, but the palate definitely needs more time to flesh out and relax, considering the current tightness of the tannins.

About GIANNI BRUNELLI
Gianni Brunelli was from an old Montalcino family. He dedicated his life to upholding the local traditions of great food, wine and hospitality. He became famous for all of the above at his legendary restaurant Osteria Le Logge in Siena "where customers are treated like friends and friends like gods". In 1988 he re-established his family's grape growing tradition at Le Chiuse de Sotto, a 2 ha vineyard below the hill town of Montalcino. An additional 4.5 ha vineyard named “Podernovone” has since been purchased south of Montalcino.
Sadly Gianni Brunelli passed away in 2008, but his wife Laura carries on. She is a great character in her own right, big-hearted, and full of generosity and warmth. It is not surprising that Gianni Brunelli's wines are as supple, outgoing and hedonistic as Brunello can be. Aged in big vats of Slovenian oak, they are elegant wines that have none of the severity that Brunello was once known for. Stylistically they have more in common with classic Burgundy or Barolo, which is to say that they are wines of plush texture and a core of ripe fruit.
