Vinous on EL ENEMIGO

Titre

Founded by enologist Alejandro Vigil in 2008 in partnership with Adrianna Catena (Laura Catena’s sister), El Enemigo mainly uses grapes from the Uco Valley to produce styles that reinvigorate the flavor profile of Argentine wine. They are having particular success with their Cabernet Francs, which reflect the full variety of the terroirs of Mendoza. In my opinion, their white wines are more interesting in the Argentine wine scene. The Chardonnay is a blend of Gualtallary grapes made with multiple techniques, ranging from barrel fermentation to wine aged under a white veil of yeast or flor (biological aging process,) resulting in a unique and delicious palate. Their Torrontés aims to introduce a new stylistic chapter to this indigenous grape.

Descorchados, 2024

The main source of cabernet franc from El Enemigo (one of the masters of the variety in South America) is located on the sandy stone and limestone soils of Gualtallary, toward the north of the Uco Valley and about 1,400 meters above sea level. In this case, it's a selection of blocks rich in calcium carbonate that, in a cool season like 2021, has given a delicious combination of fruity flavors and herbal notes. The palate is tense and full of firm and juicy tannins, while the flavors of sour cherries have a party going on. A little delight that speaks of El Enemigo's expertise with the variety and an excellent year at Uco.

Wine Advocate, November 2022

The 2020 Gran Enemigo Gualtallary Single Vineyard is nothing but phenomenal. It's very fresh and balanced and, for a warm year like 2020, doesn't show any heat or excess; it's subtle and has an ethereal character within the powerful and exuberant character from Gualtallary. It fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts and some full clusters, sometimes up to 70% of the volume. It's intense and powerful, but something makes if feel light on its feet and with great inner power. This is still young and should develop nicely in bottle and for a long time. 9,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2021 after maturing in large oak foudres for 15 months.

James Suckling, March 2023

A deep, stony, mineral bonarda with red cherries, blue fruit, graphite and some grilled herbs. Tight and juicy on the palate with firm but resolved tannins and a long, linear finish. Lovely austerity here

James Suckling, May 2024

A consistently impressive chardonnay that highlights purity and saline minerality. Salted lemons, sliced apples, seashells and stones drizzled with a touch of oak spice. Full-bodied yet tense and lightly saline on the palate, with bright acidity and a pure, lengthy finish. Nervy and simply delicious.
