About this winery

Azelia is still something of a Barolo lover's secret. Though the estate is not a high-profile one, proprietor Luigi Scavino is cousin of Enrico Scavino of the renowned Paolo Scavino estate, and shares ownership of the famed Fiasco hill in Castiglione Falletto with him. Tasting notes

The Bricco dell’Oriolo vineyard is close to Luigi’s heart as it was owned by his mother’s family. Located in the commune of Montelupo Albese , 13km south of Alba. The vines are on average 45 years old and are planted on south facing calcareous, sandy slopes. Luigi could have easily planted Nebbiolo here and charged more money for the wine, however he will never compromise quality and knows that this vineyard will produce the best Dolcetto possible.

Modern and traditional techniques are used to achieve a balance of fresh fruit and terroir. Only natural yeasts are used and enzymes are never added. Fermentation is carried out using temperature controlled rotofermenters and the Dolcetto is aged in stainless steel. The wines are unfined and unfiltered and stabilisation is carried out using gravity.

September 2022 (Vintage 2020)

The 2020 Dolcetto d'Alba Bricco dell'Oriolo is a very pretty, gracious wine built on mid-weight structure and expressive, floral aromatics. Bright red cherry fruit, spice, chalk, mint and white pepper lend aromatic nuance.
