About this winery

At heart, Catena is a story about family. Family who poured their lives, passion and spirit into transforming scrub-laden desert into some of the most beautiful and unique vineyards in the world. Family that passed their knowledge from generation to generation, blending collective memory with state-of-the-art science from the new world of viticulture. Family who, through risk-taking, faith and a little luck, transformed their treasured Mendoza terroir into the fountainhead of the award-winning...

Product notes

In the 1950´s, Don Domingo Catena began sourcing Malbec from the historic vineyards of Vista Flores, sitting at an altitude of 3608 ft. Soil is alluvial in origin. Loamy, with rounded rocks on the bottom (80% Sand - 10% Clay - 10% Silt).

Production notes

The grapes go through cold maceration for 5 days at 10ºC. The juice is then fermented for 16 days with a post-fermentation maceration of 10 days. 12 months in barrel (35% new). Barrel selection varies depending on vineyard and vintage. 85% French, 15% American oak.

Tasting notes

The Catena Malbec Appellation Vista Flores shows a dark violet color with black reflections. The nose offers ripe, concentrated dark and red fruit aromas with delicate floral notes of lavender and violet, and mocha. The mouthfeel is rich and full with notes of sweet spice and a touch of leather. The finish presents soft, well-integrated tannins with bright, crisp acidity that gives the wine exceptional length.

James Suckling, April 2020 (Vintage 2018)

A rich, dark-plum and purple-berry nose here with violets and spiced currants, as well as freshly baked biscuits. The palate has such clarity and openness with smoothly delivered, fresh, ripe plums at the gently spicy finish. Drink now.

April 2021

A solid malbec with quite a firm, linear flow to it, with blackberry, black-tea and blueberry undertones. It’s medium-bodied with firm tannins and a fresh, racy finish. Delivers finesse at the end.

November 2022 (Vintage 2021)

Now there's also a 2021 Appellation Vista Flores Malbec from the collection of IG wines. It was produced with grapes from loamy soils with rounded stones at 1,100 meters above sea level. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in French oak barrels, 35% of them new, for 12 months. It has moderate 13.7% alcohol and very good acidity and freshness, reflecting a cool vintage, with varietal notes of violets, berries and herbs and a medium-bodied palate with fine tannins.

March 2023 (Vintage 2021)

A fresh and very well-made malbec with some roasted sweet spices, violets, hazelnuts and blue fruits. Tannins are really soft and dusty on the medium-bodied palate. Elegant, scented and long, although there is not a lot of depth and gravity in the center palate. Delicious now.
