About this winery

The Latour-Giraud estate has been established in the village of Meursault for many generations. Focused primarily on Meursault, the estate owns an impressive range of Premier Cru and Villages vineyards between 20 and 50+ years old, such as the largest Premier Cru Genevrières vineyard in which two thirds of the vines are more than 50 years old. Product notes

The appellation Meursault Perrieres spread over 13 hectares, divided into 4 parts between Blagny and the Charmes. With the Genevrieres, it is the finest, the most fabulous of the 1er Crus of Meursault. Its name comes from an old underground quarry which used to provide stones for the construction of village named Meursault.

Production notes

Only the free run juice is fermented with wild, natural yeasts in barrels of which 25% is new. The wines are kept on their lees an appropriate time to balance texture and acidity while racking is kept to a minimum. The whites are fined, but not filtered, and bottled by hand. Unlike many producers who bottle all their wines at once, Latour-Giraud carefully monitors each wine and bottles at the optimal time over a 6 month period.

Tasting notes

This wine is complex, rich, and powerful. On the nose there is this wonderful lime blossom bouquet. A combination of pineapple, grapefruit, lemon-citrus, vanilla toast, along with minerality grace the palate. Spicy with racy acidity. Great aging potential.

June 2016 (Vintage 2016)

A strikingly well-layered if decidedly restrained nose is composed by cool and gorgeously pure aromas of mineral reduction, acacia blossom, essence of pear and a hint of wood spice. The racy, intense and overtly stony medium weight flavors possess terrific delineation before culminating in a superbly intense and bone dry finish that evidence a touch of youthful austerity. This is a classically styled example that should age brilliantly well and it is going to need it to further develop the overall sense of depth.

Stephen Tanzer, September 2018 (Vintage 2016)

(Latour told me this wine and most of his other premier crus weigh in at about 13.5% alcohol and carry about 4.5 grams per liter of acidity, which he attributes largely to the low-yielding old vines): Bright lemon-yellow. Lemon zest and crushed stone on the nose, plus a piquant note of orange. Conveys a brighter, rockier mineral aspect than the Charmes ("another form of minerality," says Latour), along with more tension, and a note of pineapple that remains this side of exotic. This lovely high-pitched, concentrated wine is shockingly tastable now, yet it also possesses the force of the vintage's better examples. Latour noted that this wine finished its malolactic fermentation first among his '16s and that he gave it a slightly stronger fining with casein than the rest.

"Bright pale yellow. Aromas of pineapple, grapefruit and crushed stone are accented by a hint of white pepper; more about soil than primary fruit. Dense, rich and powerful, with lovely sweetness and lift to the flavors of pineapple and lime blossom. Ultimately less voluptuous than the Genevrieres and more solidly structured and backward on the aftertaste. This will need some time in bottle for its full complement of flavors to blossom."

June 2015

This too flashes a highly discreet and ultra-pure nose that is composed of spiced pear, green apple and acacia blossom. There is impressive richness and intensity to the pear-infused middle weight flavors that seem to be constructed on a base of minerality before culminating in an equally pure and strikingly long finish that is attractively dry, stylish and very classy. This saline-inflected effort is also a textbook example of the appellation and boasts impeccably fine balance.

Good medium-deep yellow. Rather closed aromas of pineapple, crushed stone and smoky oak. Concentrated flavors of apple and orange oil show good lift and supporting minerality. Sharply chiseled, firmly built yet harmonious already, this dense, tactile wine finishes firm and long, with a zesty rocky quality and excellent grip. Serious, very well-made Perrières with no easy sweetness.

An even more complex nose amalgamates notes of mineral reduction, green apple, pear
liqueur, white flowers and a variety of citrus elements. The strikingly textured, intense and unusually rich flavors possess so much minerality that the mouthfeel is akin to rolling a small pebble on the palate, all wrapped in a harmonious and wonderfully
long finale. This needs to develop more depth but that is typical for young Perrières.

(Latour made just a single one-year-old barrel of this juice): Pure aromas of lemon, pineapple and crushed stone went into a shell in the glass. Extremely dry and unforthcoming, coming across as narrower and tighter today than the Genevrières. An uncompromising mouthful of rocks and pineapple, with penetrating minerality. Finishes tactile, saline and slightly phenolic, lingering impressively on the palate without really expanding. This extremely backward wine will need patience.

September 2018

(one of the three barrels was new, the other two from 2015): Bright, light yellow with a green tinge. Ripe but reticent nose hints at pineapple, dusty rock and marzipan (one of the three barrels is going through an oxidative phase). Sappy, thick and palate-saturating, with its mineral density leavening this very rich wine's sweetness of fruit. Not a creamy style but finishes with impressive building length, excellent savory grip and an absence of hard edges. Latour describes this wine as "not too large," noting that he picked the fruit early, on August 28 or 29.

A cool and highly restrained nose requires aggressive swirling to reveal its aromas of Granny Smith apples, lavender and mineral-reduction. The energetic medium weight flavors brim with minerality while offering good power and drive on the refined and impressively long finish that is shaped by firm and bright acidity. This too is lovely.

June 2019 (Vintage 2017)

This too is wonderfully elegant with its airy and distinctly cool blend of mineral reduction, green apple, spiced pear and jasmine tea. The sleek, sophisticated and focused middle weight flavors brim with both dry extract and an almost pungent minerality on the textured and exceptionally intense finish that goes on and on. This is really lovely though note well that at least some patience will be required.
