About this winery

Situated in the heart of the Mosel's finest vineyards, the Max Ferdinand Richter estate has been in the family for over 300 years. The family owns 48 acres of priceless vines on the magnificent stretch of the river between Erden and Brauenberg including all the best sites: Graacher Himmelreich, Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Brauenberger Juffer and Richter's monopole Veldenzer Eilsenberg. This is quite literally an embarrassment of riches. Richter's vines are sustainably farmed; all grapes are...

August 2018

The 2017er Veldenzer Elisenberg Spätlese was harvested at a comparatively modest 87° Oechsle. This beauty immediately captures one’s attention through its hugely complex and elegantly floral nose made of white peach, minty herbs, Limoncello and smoke. The wine is superbly refined and elegant on the palate, where a delicately smooth and creamy texture underlines the ethereally light yet highly complex flavors beautifully. The finish is pure, precise and utterly refined. This is a classic Spätlese in the making which shines through its glorious finesse...

June 2022 (Vintage 2021)

The 2021er Elisenberger Riesling Spätlese, as it is referred to on the consumer label, was made from fruit from 70-year-old vines harvested at 83° Oechsle and was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (70 g/l). It offers a beautifully refined and elegant nose of herbs, smoke, dried white flowers, pear, and prune. The wine has great presence but without weight and the precision is remarkable. The finish is playful with
some fruity elements but also zest and purity.

July 2017

This Spätlese, harvested at a low 87° Oechsle, offers a beautifully elegant nose of pear, vineyard peach, apricot blossom and whipped cream. The wine proves gorgeously racy and vibrant on the palate, which gives it focus and tension. The finish is mouth-watering, tart and loaded with ripe fruits and minerals. This is a beautiful Spätlese in the making.

January 2018

Picked at only four degrees Oechsle more than the corresponding Kabinett, but from older vines, this features scents and juicy abundance of red raspberry, white peach and grapefruit shot through with the same saliva-inducing salinity that helped make that Kabinett memorably delightful. The feel here is surprisingly firm but disarmingly and delectably delicate, leading to a refreshingly lingering finish of striking clarity and tingling brightness, its alluring purity of fruit supported by unobtrusive sweetness.

August 2022 (Vintage 2021)

Picked in early November at 84° Oechsle, the 2021 Elisenberger Riesling Spätlese shows concentrated and focused fruit on the nose. Lean and straight on the palate, with thrilling acidity and lingering salinity that is enormously mouth-watering but dries out your cheeks, this is a future Spätlese that shouldn't be enjoyed before 2035 or maybe even later to save your stomach. The wine is concentrated, precise and focused, enormously vital and saline, and it should be great fun drinking this in 15-20 years. Bottled with 7.5% stated alcohol and 11 grams per liter of total strap-on acidity. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.

October 2016 (Vintage 2015)

Harvested at a comparatively low 91° Oechsle, this offers a stunning nose of white minerals, fresh pear and green herbs. The wine has the presence of a racy and slender Auslese on the palate and leaves a gorgeously fresh and zesty feel in the long finish. This is plain gorgeous. 2025- 2045

June 2023 (Vintage 2022)

The 2022er Elisenberger Riesling Spätlese, as it is referred to on the consumer label, was made from fruit from 70-year-old vines harvested at 83° Oechsle and was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (70 g/l). It proves still marked by residual scents from its spontaneous fermentation and only gradually reveals its enticing nose made of pear, grapefruit puree, chalky elements, white flowers, a hint of apricot, and fine spices. The wine is nicely juicy and beautifully playful on the palate and leaves a fresh and subtly intense feel of fruits and minerals in the long finish. A touch of sweetness still needs to integrate in the aftertaste, something which will happen after a decade or so of bottle aging.

The creamy white peach, apricot and guava flavors are accented by notes of basil and thyme in this expressive style. The minerally finish features hints of ripe gooseberry and blood orange, with a lacy texture. Drink now through 2035. 250 cases made.

October 2015 (Vintage 2014)

This Spätlese was harvested at 87° Oechsle from the old vines (planted in the 1950s-1960s) in the Elisenberg. It offers very elegant scents of white minerals, white mint, white and yellow peach, pineapple and grapefruit on the nose. What makes this quite irresistible is the gorgeously side on the palate, being at the same time nicely ripe, elegant and fresh. A gorgeous touch of whipped cream adds finesse to the long and mouth-watering finish. This a terrific effort, with plenty of upside potential!

May 2023 (Vintage 2022)

From 70- to 80-year-old vines picked four weeks after the Kabinett and with about 10% botrytis, the intensely yellow 2022 Elisenberger Riesling Spätlese opens with a deep, intense and complex nose of blueberries, yeast and crushed stones. Round and lush on the palate, with raisin and nutty notes, this is a textured, very complete and elegant Riesling with stunning acidity for this vintage (at about nine grams per liter). This is a complex and promising, pretty unique Spätlese with great aging capacity and a vital, saline and savory finish. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2023.
