About this winery

Located in the commune of Radda in Chianti, The Fattoria Poggerino winery is one of the properties of a larger estate which used to belong to Prince Ginori Conti, a descendant of one of Florence’s oldest families. Floriana Ginori Conti inherited the winery from her father in the 1970s and in 1980 together with her husband Fabrizio Lanza, began to produce a Chianti Classico with the “Poggerino” label. In 1999 she handed over the property to her two children; Piero and Benedetta Lanza, who...

Production notes

After having carried out a careful selection of the grapes in the vineyard, de-stemming follows with soft pressing and, without adding selected yeasts, alcoholic fermentation takes place between 28 ° C and 30 ° C. The entire fermentation / maceration process takes place in steel tanks for about 35 days with manual punching down and pumping over. In December the new wine is poured into the 6.5hl concrete egg where the malolactic fermentation takes place. After 12 months of maturation, bottling follows. Refinement is guaranteed for at least 8 months before being marketed.

Tasting notes

Bright ruby red color. To the nose and to the taste there are hints of earth, graphite and tobacco with hints of fruit. Extremely complex tannins sweet and persistent tannins.

Antonio Galloni, August 2023 (Vintage 2020)

The 2020 Chianti Classico Nuovo is a selection of Sangiovese from older vines on the property. Perfumed and light on its feet, the 2020 is super translucent and expressive. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, white pepper and sweet pipe tobacco all grace this idiosyncratic wine. The 2020 was vinified and aged entirely in cement. As such it is a quirky Chianti Classico with few direct peers.

June 2022 (Vintage 2019)

The 2019 Chianti Classico Nuovo is 100% old-vine Sangiovese aged in concrete. Bright and effusive, with striking aromatic presence, the Nuovo is an absolute delight. Nervy, persistent tannins and bright acids are a reminder we are in Radda. This mid-weight Chianti Classico has so much to offer. Bright red fruit, white pepper, chalk and dried flowers linger.

Michaela Morris , February 2023 (Vintage 2020)

Made since 2013, Nuovo is a selection of Poggerino’s best tank of Chianti Classico. It is racked into a single 6.5hl concrete egg for malolactic fermentation and further refinement. The nose is lifted, with cherry and raspberry sharing the stage with intense violet. Very neat and promising, the long, chalky tannins stretch out leisurely while citrussy acidity adds crunch. It builds in warmth but the concentration of fruit absorbs the alcohol. Accents of orange peel progress to juniper on the finish.

February 2020 (Vintage 2017)

Fresh clay, spice and ripe, but not roasted, red cherry. Firm, chalky, mouth-coating tannins but with enough depth of flavour to carry them through. Give it a year or two before broaching. Nice transparency.
