About this winery

Located in the commune of Radda in Chianti, The Fattoria Poggerino winery is one of the properties of a larger estate which used to belong to Prince Ginori Conti, a descendant of one of Florence’s oldest families. Floriana Ginori Conti inherited the winery from her father in the 1970s and in 1980 together with her husband Fabrizio Lanza, began to produce a Chianti Classico with the “Poggerino” label. In 1999 she handed over the property to her two children; Piero and Benedetta Lanza, who...

Production notes

After a careful selection in the vineyard the grapes are destemmed and pressed. The alcoholic fermentation begins without the addition of selected yeasts and proceeds at 28°/30°C. The entire process of vinification and maceration takes place in concrete tanks for approximately 55 days with pumpovers and manual punchdowns. In December the new wine is racked to casks of 20/25hl of Slavonian oak where the malolactic fermentation takes place. After ageing for 18 months the wine is assembled bottled.

Tasting notes

Bright ruby red colour. On the nose notes of blackberries, leather, cherries and red currant with a touch of liquorice, graphite and tobacco. Sweet and persistent tannins.

March 2022 (Vintage 2019)

Planted in 1984, Bugialla is a 4ha plot at 500 metres on stony Galestro soil. Owner Piero Lanza picks the larger bunches first for the Chianti Classico and leaves the smaller bunches to ripen longer for the Riserva. Just bottled, the 2019 is shy but with coaxing, aromas of herbs and lavender emerge. Tight on the entry, it expands with a soft ripeness of charming brambly fruit, succulent with compact chalky tannins. Intricately textured and long.

August 2023 (Vintage 2020)

An enticing red, with smoky black cherry and blackberry flavors stitched into a supple texture. Reveals iron, sanguine, earth and juniper details as this unwinds on the lingering finish. Elegant overall, despite the firm structure.

Michaela Morris , February 2023 (Vintage 2020)

Poggerino’s Riserva is a selection of the smallest bunches from the estate’s oldest vineyard. It sees a spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeast in concrete tanks lasting up to 50 days. While ageing is in medium-sized Slavonian oak casks, there's a hint of toast and wood spice to begin. Alluring cinnamon nuances meld with cedar and balsamic herbs. With layers of grainy tannins and compact fruit, this is one of Radda’s more powerful examples, yet it still sports the high-altitude township’s bracing acidity. Stony minerals add further depth to this multi-faceted wine.

Antonio Galloni, August 2023 (Vintage 2020)

The 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla is a potent, brooding wine. Macerated dark cherry, licorice, leather, tobacco and smoke all flesh out over time. The 2020 saw a whopping 50 days on the skins, with malolactic fermentation in cement and then two years in 20-25hL Slavonian oak casks. There is a bit of new oak tannin from one of the casks that needs time to integrate. This young, potent Riserva has a bright future.
