About this winery

Founded in 1825, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy's greatest domaines. Originally the company was a classic negotiant business, based in Nuits St. Georges and engaged in the buying and selling of wine but not the production of it. Product notes

The origins of the appellation's name are not entirely clear. It could be an ancient word for "poiriers" (meaning pear tree). It is situated in the South of the village in the "Les PorĂȘts" climat and its rustic style is similar to that of the "Les Saint-Georges". In 1855 this area was stated by Dr Lavalle to be one of the very best in Nuits. The family is very attached to these vines as they were the very first to be purchased by the Domaine in the 1830's.

Production notes

The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand. The proportion of de-stemmed grapes and whole clusters varies depending on the vintage. The wines are punched down daily in order to extract colour, tannins and aromas from the skin of the grapes. After a 19 day vatting period, the alcoholic fermentation is complete. The free-run wine is run off using a gravity system whilst the marc is pressed slowly and gently in order to extract an exceptionally pure press wine. The wines are aged for 16 months in French oak barrels (40-50% new oak and 50-60% one-wine barrels) which have been selected for their fine grain and moderate toast. The wines are left to age in our hygrometry-controlled cellars at consistent, natural temperatures.

Tasting notes

Deep ruby red colour. The nose discloses black fruits, toasty notes and a hint of oak. The smooth, round attack gives way to a powerful and structured mid-palate. A well-balanced and very persistent wine with excellent ageing potential. Serve with: Duck breast with seared foie gras, game, rabbit stew, roasted or grilled red meats.

From a two-year old Taransaud barrel. Floral and fresh with pretty, juicy cherry and raspberry fruit. Good concentration and nice structure. Fine, direct and expressive.

Extremely rich and opulent aromas with blueberries, orange peel and peach seeds. Flowers, too. Full and round, offering up rich tannins and a flavorful finish. Very persistent.

Faiveley is almost on its home turf in Les St Georges, which is situated close to its
headquarters in downtown Nuits. This is a very good example of the Premier Cru with Grand Cru aspirations, showing an appealing combination of grip, red fruits and tannic structure. There’s a freshness to the finish that bodes well for bottle ageing.

The Faiveleys, whose roots are in Nuits, have the biggest holdings of this Premier Cru at two hectares. This is a classic expression of the village, with considerable amounts of firm, chewy tannins, compact dark fruits and a bloody, ferrous note.

Firm and structured, this wine offers dark tannins and concentration. It has the acidity of the year but with a solid texture. There are hints of the perfume and the delicious fruit to come, but they will take time to show.

Good bright, dark red. Pure aromas of rose petal and exotic Middle Eastern spices. Juicy and on the cool side, showing a distinctly incisive character and excellent lift to the perfumed red berry and mineral flavors. Still quite tightly wound and restrained. The impression of tactile minerality carries through to the aromatic, long finish.

June 2023 (Vintage 2021)

This holding is the largest for Faiveley in the village where they are based, totalling 1.69ha, with the oldest vines planted in 1945. In 2021 it delivered a wine of bright, fresh cherry aromas with an edge of rose petals and mineral, but nothing green or astringent. The texture is vibrant, yet there is rewarding density and good length. It is mostly destemmed and fermented on native yeasts with daily punching down before ageing 16 months in casks (half new)

There is excellent complexity to the well-layered nose of red pinot fruit, cherry, plum, earth and sandalwood. I very much like the mouth feel to the ripe and enveloping medium-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract that really coats the palate on the muscular and powerful finish. This moderately austere effort is old school in style and character and will definitely need time in bottle to become more civilized.

Good medium red. Aromas of black cherry, menthol and sweet oak, lifted by topnotes of rose petal and violet. A step up in flavor and depth from the foregoing Nuits samples, showing lovely cut and lift to the perfumed flavors of sweet black cherry and menthol. At once chewy and refined, finishing with ripe tannins, attractive salinity and lingering perfume.

(picked on September 27, the same day that Faiveley started harvesting its Pinot Noir on the Côte de Beaune): Good full red. Musky, reduced aromas of black raspberry and game; distinctly wild at present. Sweet but reticent on the palate, with flavors of strawberry, redcurrant, mocha and peppery spices a bit hardened today by unabsorbed CO2. Finishes firm-edged, with good length. In an awkward stage today, a touch rustic.

Reduction presently masks the fruit and renders the nose impossible to assess. As it virtually always is this is bigger, richer and more powerful with fine mid-palate concentration that helps to buffer the slightly firmer and more rustic tannins on the impressively complex and persistent finish. This is very Nuits in character and will need 10 to 12 years to arrive at its apogee.

A pretty if restrained nose speaks of various wild red berries, earth and once again sauvage nuances. The supple yet concentrated medium weight flavors possess both fine volume and detail on the punchy and lightly mineral-inflected finale that is less rustic than usual. What is entirely typical though is the expected aging curve as this is almost certainly to be extremely long-lived.

The delicious and markedly intense medium-bodied flavors flash evident minerality on the moderately austere and lingering finale. Like the Damodes, this could use better depth, but more should reasonably develop with time in bottle.

Bright ruby-red. A touch of reduction to the aromas of black raspberry and menthol. A step up in richness and fullness from the foregoing Nuits-Saint-Georges examples, conveying sexy sweetness to its flavors of dark cherry and dark chocolate complicated by a hint of white fruits. In a sweeter, generous style in the context of the vintage, with the wine's big dusty tannins nicely supported by its relatively full body.

The airy and expressive nose is compositionally similar to that of the Damodes if perhaps with few spice elements. By contrast there is a bit more size and weight to the caressing medium weight flavors that possess a beguiling mid-palate texture though the natural rusticity of Porrets comes up on the nicely complex and lingering finish. This is very likely to tighten up considerably once in bottle so patience will be required here too.

No such reduction plagues the nose in this case as there is both good freshness and expressiveness to the array of red berry fruit, earth, sauvage and smoky hints. The appealingly textured, intense, detailed and vibrant middle weight flavors possess a completely different mouth feel while delivering a lingering, complex and more obviously austere finale. This too is very Nuits in style and will need a few more years of bottle age as the supporting tannins are markedly firm.
