About this winery

Shaw + Smith winery was founded in 1989 by Michael Hill Smith and Martin Shaw with the goal of producing elegant, refined, world class wines from the cool climate Adelaide hills region of Australia. That Shaw + Smith have succeeded in spades should come as no surprise given the resumes of the winery's two founders. Michael Hill Smith was born into wine, a member of the Yalumba family. Product notes

Shaw + Smith was established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw. They make wines exclusively from the Adelaide Hills, from varieties that suit the cooler climate: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Growing the best possible grapes, managing vineyards sustainably, and valuing vine health, soil health, and low yields are central to the Shaw + Smith approach.

Production notes

Hand picked. Cool fermentation in stainless steel followed by maturation on lees. Early bottling to retain freshness.

Tasting notes

Typically it shows a pink grapefruit character, concentration and mid-palate texture, which reflect the carefully selected sites and hand harvesting during the small window of perfect ripeness.

August 2024 (Vintage 2024)

Perhaps one of Australia's most famed sauvignon blancs with a seemingly unnerving level of quality for the pricepoint. No slouch here, a zesty, fresh, bright and crisp rendering of the variety. Resplendent with passionfruit, just-ripe pineapple, lime and cut-grass characters between the bouquet and palate, very even, flows well, finishes with decent length and a light chalky pucker. Just so, done well, easy drinking and moderately complex to boot.

January 2025 (Vintage 2024)

The nose is fresh and vibrant, with refined aromas of lychees, orange blossoms, cut grass, candied limes and flint. The palate is light- to medium-bodied with precise acidity, a generous mouthfeel and notes of green apple skin, grapefruit pith and lemon peel. Fresh with generous complexity.

September 2024 (Vintage 2024)

I love this wine. It tastes the same every year, which is impressive considering the relative size of it. So, this 2024 Sauvignon Blanc leads with juniper and cassis, green apples, white-topped strawberries, nashi pear and snow peas. In the mouth, it is tightly coiled, fresh and zippy, with a distinct salsa verde (green chili, coriander) character to close. This is very good. 12% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
