1882 was the first vintage produced by Gustave Niebaum on the estate that would become one of the most renowned wineries in the New World – Inglenook. In the same year, Niebaum dug a small cave in the foothills of the Mayacamas to experiment and better understand temperature ideals for barrel aging. Niebaum’s vision was legendary and his inquisitive search for perfection pioneered many initiatives of the modern-day Napa Valley. Today, Inglenook lies in the heart of the famous Rutherford Bench, offering an unparalleled wealth of quality fruit, richness and minerality from this unique terroir. 1882, made exclusively from estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, has been created to honor Gustave.
The 2014 is bigger, denser and heavier concentration than previous vintages of this wine.1882 Cabernet Sauvignon, opens intensely with an alluring nose featuring notes of cassis, sandalwood, cigar box, black currants, spice and vanilla. To retain the aromatic quality of the varietals, 1882 is aged in 1 to 2-year-old oak, making wood less influential on the wine. On the palate there is a rush of tannin and big bold start of lush black fruits that flow easily over the structure. Generous and long, the flavors are well defined, elevated by a pluck of natural acidity. The wine finishes fresh with forestry floral notes and a hint of wood and herbs.
This bottling reflects the past several years' fine-tuning the winery's vision in the vineyard and in the cellar. Including small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec, it's a rounded, concentrated wine that expresses the vintage with ripe, grippy tannins that beg for further resolution. Blackberry, clove and leather flavors rise to the fore.

Confident and spiced with flavour and plenty of signature Inglenook balance. Named after the year Gustave Niebaum delivered the first vintage of his new Rutherford estate. 15% new French oak, the rest one-fill barrels both French and American.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon 1882 shows just how compelling this vintage is, even at the entry-level. Black cherries, plums, menthol, lavender and licorice flow across the palate in a dark, sumptuous wine endowed with real depth and nuance. Fleshy and supple, but with plenty of supporting acidity and vintage 2013 energy, the 1882 is a terrific introduction to the vintage. This is a very serious wine.
