Made from vineyards planted in the Maremma region, Ilatraia is an unusual blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 40% Petit Verdot. Being a fan of the latter variety, I liked what it brought to this substantial wine, full of black fruit, tightly wound, with a neat, spicy side. The 2011 is still fairly compact and youthful. It's a big wine, sure, but more because of the nature of the blend than because it's trying to be flashy.
