Michaela Morris, January 2025 (Vintage 2021)The Scavino family owns almost two of Margheria’s 8ha and boasts vines that are upwards of 65 years old. Here, calcareous white clay with a substantial component of silt yields sturdily structured wines, yet Azelia’s example serves this up with an equal measure of refinement. The 2021 wafts with warm earth and currant blossom. Full and darkly fruited, it makes a strong and immediate tannic impact. But as commanding as the tannins are, they remain smooth in texture and are padded by a fleshy layer. The salty twisty is salivating. This will certainly benefit from a few years in the cellar.
