About this winery

In the 14th century, during their stays in Avignon, the popes – especially Pope John XXII – built a papal castle in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Impressed by the area’s exceptional soils, they established vineyards on the slopes surrounding the château and were instrumental in promoting the local wine’s reputation around the world. A notarial act dated 16 December 1695 mentions “Bois Renard”, which over time has become “Beaurenard”. It has been a family-run estate for seven...

Notes about product

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is characterized by the diversity of its soils, with a mosaic of plots where different varieties grow together on limestone rock, round pebbles on a clay substrate with varying amounts of iron, and fine sedimentary sand.

Winemaking notes

The grapes are hand-picked and sorted in the vineyard. Co fermentation, long vatting for soft extractions. Matured for 12 months in conical vats, foudres and barrels.

Tasting notes

Made from old vines of different varieties growing together, with moderate yields, Boisrenard is characterized by the silky weave of its tannins and its generous fruit. A wine of immense depth.

More complex and nuanced as well as powerful, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Boisrenard is a field blend (two-thirds Grenache and the rest a mix of varieties) that spent 18 months in a combination of older barrels, new barrels, and foudre. Its deep purple/ruby color is followed by a sensational perfume of blackberries, black raspberries, Asian spices, and graphite. With full-bodied richness, building tannin, remarkable purity, and a huge finish, it's going to rival the 2001 as the best vintage to date. You should have this in your cellar.

January 2019

The 2016 'Boisrenard' as an absolutely brilliant wine from Domaine de Beaurenard which takes things to another level. This stunning blend of old-vine Grenache (66%), Mourvèdre (12%) and Syrah ( 12%) undergoes lengthy vatting, and is aged traditionally, with no filtration or fining, followed by 18 months in oak barrels, before being bottled and spending further time in underground cellars. The wine itself instantly begins to impress with its fascinating and beautifully fresh aromatics of ripe black raspberries and red plums which are joined by exotic spices, florals, wet stones, cherry wood, smoke and hints of earthy minerals all soaring from the glass. On the palate this boasts a gorgeous full body, with a velvety texture along with excellent depth, concentration and precision. It continues to impress as it displays outstanding overall balance with remarkable finesse and elegance, as it demonstrates stunning class and refinement from start to finish. Even in its youth this is completely captivating, and should only go on to age gracefully for decades to come.

September 2018

A strapping, richly layered wine, teeming with blackberry, black currant and boysenberry paste flavors wrapped in a lively black licorice note. Stays juicy and energetic throughout, with light bramble and graphite nuances checking in on the very long and powerfully built finish.

August 2018

Just like the regular cuvée, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Boisrenard includes all 18 of the appellation's permitted varieties, although it's mostly (66%) Grenache Noir. Strawberries and raspberries shine on the nose, followed by a full-bodied palate that's creamy-silky and lush but also bright, lively and long. It's a super effort, at what should be a realistic price.
