Aromas of dark berries, orange zest, smoke and cloves introduce Faiveley's 2023 Mercurey La Framboisière, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine that's succulent and charming, with good depth at the core and a fruity finish. As ever, it represents a terrific value.

A very impressive Mercurey, thanks to the generous raspberry and sour-cherry fruit character, the elegant tannins and the fresh acidity. Everything fits so neatly and there's enough structure for this to age really well. Excellent vitality at the long, uplifting finish.

What a joyful red Burgundy. Full black and red raspberry fruit. Juicy and mouth-filling in spite of the lightness of touch, due to the lively acidity. Gentle tannins underline this beautifully. Fresh and lively finish. From an 11-hectare monopole site. From organically grown grapes. Vinified with 20% whole cluster and 30% new oak.

The fragrant nose of raspberries with some floral notes pulls you into this medium-bodied, supple and elegant Mercurey that’s already delightful to drink, but also has the potential to age for some years, thanks the ripe, gentle tannins.

Faiveley produce 40,000 bottles of this lovely cuvée, which represents superb value. An appealing bouquet of strawberry, raspberry and coniferous forest floor, with subtle meaty bass notes, precedes a medium-full, supple and flavourful wine with a nice core of sweet fruit and fine, melted tannins.

On my recent visit, I also took the opportunity to taste Faiveley's emblematic 2022 Mercurey La Framboisière, a rich and supple wine evocative of raspberries, plums and spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and enveloping, with, as I wrote of its 2019 predecessor, all the charm but less of the frivolity that this cuvée has historically displayed.

Vinified with some 20% whole bunch this year, Faiveley's 2020 Mercurey La Framboisière offers up inviting aromas of sweet berries, plums, rose petals and rich soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless, it's rich but lively, standing out as one of the more supple, ethereal wines in this year's range. It exemplifies the great value still to be found in contemporary Burgundy.

A ripe and very fresh nose speaks of crushed cherry, dark raspberry and a spicy top note. The vibrant and delicious middleweight flavors possess good volume, indeed the word fleshy comes to mind, all wrapped in a clean, dry-in-the-best sense, and lingering finish. This is already drinking well though it has the density to repay mid-term keeping. This is one to look for as it offers fine value.

Monopole. Lightish crimson. Lightly spicy red fruit. Juicy and gentle and finishes fresh. Very supple and full of cherry fruit. It’s not bottled yet (but will be shortly) but you could drink this now because it is so rounded. Good depth too. 

Les prix montent, la qualité persiste. C’est déjà ça. Tout le style Faiveley est là, toujours un chouïa austère mais aussi d’une droiture exemplaire. Vin de nez où la finesse prime, vin de dentelle qui ne marque jamais trop la bouche. Seulement l’essentiel d’un pinot qui traverse les modes et sait être, simplement. (5 +) ©

Après plusieurs années dans les limbes, Faiveley est en voie de rédemption. Depuis son arrivée en poste en 2008, Julien Bordet a remis l'ordre dans les vignobles et la famille Faiveley a aussi investi 3 millions d'euros pour la rénovation du cuvier. Autant de détails qui se traduisent par une nette progression qualitative, particulièrement remarquable en 2013 avec ce savoureux mercurey qui sent bon la cerise mûre et les épices. Le même goût de fruits frais se retrouve en bouche, soutenu par une acidité qui lui confère beaucoup de vigueur. Délicat, fidèle à son millésime, sans être mince. Très satisfaisant. 

Un peu plus structuré que les Mauvarennes, cet autre Mercurey de Faiveley que je vous recommandais l’autre jour, mais en même temps moins que le réputé Clos des Myglands, le cru phare de la maison en Côte Châlonnaise, c’est un vrai beau vin de pinot noir, avec justement de jolies notions de framboise au nez; solide, donc, déjà savoureux, mais capable de tenir facilement le coup encore au moins cinq ans.
