Notes about product

Block 5 is situated on a gentle, north facing slope in the heart of The Elms vineyard and was planted in 1993. The soils vary up the slope from heavy loess and silt, clay and angular schist gravels.

Winemaking notes

20% of the fruit was retained as whole clusters with the remainder carefully de-stemmed directly to the fermenters by gravity. 8-10 days of soaking occurred prior to fermentation with indigenous yeasts and punch-downs by hand up to two times per day. The wine spent 16 months in barrel (30% new French) with two rackings and no fining or filtration, before bottling.

Tasting notes

A brooding nose led by hints of blackberry, potpourri and polished leather notes. The palate is focused, yet complex. Harmoniously balanced and a finish that seems to never end.

Joe Czerwinski , February 2020

The 2018 Block 5 Pinot Noir shows its typical dark earthiness and sous-bois notes, black cherry fruit and hints of mocha. It's medium-bodied and plump in the mouth, with plenty of flesh, supple tannins and a long, softly dusty finish tinged with clove, cinnamon and cocoa.

October 2019

This is a showy edition of Block 5 with so much on offer aromatically, from fine florals in the rose spectrum, rose hips, plenty of spice, citrus peel and sweet red cherries in abundance. The palate has such elegant, long and firm tannin with intensity and depth and it does have the compactness that defines this parcel. There’s such succulent resolve at the finish. This 2018 has bold fleshiness that really is stunning already. There’s more immediate pleasure than you’d expect from a young Block 5. From biodynamically grown grapes.
