About this winery

Olivier Humbrecht is one of the world's most renowned winegrowers. He is a Master of Wine and has been described by Robert Parker as the greatest white winemaker on earth. Yet he is very soft spoken, humble, and self-deprecating, which makes him perfectly suited to his assumed role as a global ambassador of wine. He is a champion of terroir, biodynamic farming principles, and non-interventionist winemaking, whose family have been winegrowers in Alsace for 12 generations (since 1620). He is...

Tasting notes

This wine displays intense rich ripe white fruits aromas (peach, pears…) alongside spicy notes. Clearly, it is impossible to guess the power of this wine such is the nose complex and delicate, probably the result of a very healthy (no noble rot) vintage. This Hengst tastes soft and unctuous at the beginning, coating the palate with a velvety texture, until, it really unrolls its powerful huge intensity. Numbers made this wine qualify as sweet, but it really tastes barely off-dry. The sensation it leaves on the palate is harmony and length. What a wine, and despite its power, it will be a great match with lots of foods. Grilled, smoked, spicy, marinated… anything with character.

August 2022 (Vintage 2020)

This gewurz is built on a monumental scale with gigantic concentration and structure, easily filling out the huge body. The abundant fine tannins soak up almost all of the unfermented grape sweetness and drive the very long and texturally complex, spicy finish. Already pretty mind-blowing, but great aging potential! From biodynamically grown grapes.

Yohan Castaing, September 2021 (Vintage 2019)

Both fruity and spicy, this Gewurztraminer from Hengst Grand Cru offers generosity, freshness, and a stunning complexity. Very pleasant. We can believe that this wine will benefit from several years of cellaring. Perfectly balanced, the palate is tense and precise, with a calcareous texture that brings a linear finish. Slightly tannic, the wine is racy and superb! Keep it 10 years or more, and it will be even more impressive.

Layla Schlack, November 2022 (Vintage 2019)

Fresh, inviting aromas of lychee, melon and white blossoms waft out of the glass. This wine has a pleasantly light texture that carries notes of wildflower honey, dill and fresh honeydew. Acidity enhances and brings to life this vibrant bouquet of flavors, leading into a long, restrained finish.

Kristin Bieler, May 2023 (Vintage 2019)

Rich and decadent, with lychee, creamed honey and nectarine underpinned by green herbs, fresh chive and a savory beam of salty minerality and acidity. Reveals zesty blood orange and potpourri on the long finish. Drink now through 2032. 20 cases imported.
