About this winery

A. Brumont represents the vision and dedication of Alain Brumont, a pioneering winemaker who transformed the once-overlooked Madiran appellation into one of the most respected wine regions in southwest France. Since inheriting the family estate Château Bouscass? in 1979 and acquiring Château Montus shortly after, Brumont has focused on rediscovering exceptional hillside terroirs and demonstrating the full potential of the Tannat grape. The winery’s philosophy is rooted in expressing the...

Product notes

In 1990, in his constant search for the best terroirs, Alain Brumont noticed a large 10 hectare slope, completely uncultivated, located on the highest hill in the Madiran appellation (with an altitude of 260m). He felt sure that it had great potential and decided to purchase it and plant it with Tannat. La Tyre is simply the name of a district of the commune of Castelnau-Rivière-Basse. This exceptional wine comes from a selection of the best grapes from this plot, which today represents a great terroir.

Production notes

A single plot of unique terroir. 25 to 30 year old vines are planted on a steep slope with rounded pebbles. Each vine is limited to 5/6 bunches to give full expression to the terroir. Subsoil with strata of red and variegated clay. The south-west facing plot is blessed with a long, gentle sunshine and a light breeze that cools the pebbles. A cold pre-fermentation maceration is followed by a slow fermentation and a long maceration of 30 to 45 days( depending on the vintage) malolactic fermentation takes place in wooden vats. The wines is aged for 12 months, 80% in new barrels and 20% in oval wooden casks. It is then bottled for 36 months of ageing, followed by at least 4 to 7 years in bottle (depending on the vintage) before being released.

Tasting notes

Rich, deep wine with complexity and great concentration. Refined tannins and perfect balance. Elegant palate with a harmonious, fresh finish. Regularly ranked alongside the world's greatest wines, La Tyre is an exceptional Madiran.

July 2015 (Vintage 2009)

Brooding and rich, this concentrated red has dark cherry ganache, milk chocolate, floral and plum flavors. A mouthcoating texture, with firm but integrated tannins, eases into the tobacco leaf-, tea- and graphite-infused finish.

October 2019 (Vintage 2009)

Impenetrable red in colour. The nose is lush and damsony, with a seductive richness of fruit. Velvety and very concentrated, it nonetheless exhibits vivid acidity and spice. The rather high alcohol gives a peppery finish, and a long bitter-chocolate finish. Perhaps too much of a good thing, but undeniably impressive.

February 2021 (Vintage 2009)

Aromas of spiced black cherries, blueberries, stewed blackcurrants, black tea, cloves and walnuts. It’s full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. Concentrated and powerful with a solid core of black fruit. Still chewy, as ever, but solid and typical.
