About this winery

In 1781, in the small town of Tupin-et-Semons, south of Lyon and within the most prestigious vineyard of the Rhône, Joseph Vidal founded the House of the same name. From the outset, it acquired an international reputation thanks to Thomas Jefferson, then United States Ambassador to France, who visited the estate in 1787. Production notes

Syrah and Viognier are co-fermented. Long and traditional maceration for 3 weeks. A lot of punching down of the cap "pigeage" at the beginning of fermentation, then pumping over. Fermentation with Indigenous yeast. Controlled temperature of maceration at 30°C (86°F). 100% malolactic fermentation. Aged on lees, 3 years in barrels. Natural clarification and stabilization by settling and one filtration (Cross Flow). Unfined. Maturation in bottle: 6 months before shipment.

Tasting notes

Appearance deep red with and black trace. Nose intense : Cassis, pepper, cinnamon, smoky, tobacco, black olive, boxwood. Palate very round and fresh. Tight tannin, full bodied. Blackcurrant, cherry, spices (peppery, nutmeg), violet, oaky, something animal (dry ham). Unctuous and persistent.

September 2019 (Vintage 2016)

This intensely perfumed blend of 88% Syrah and 12% Viognier boasts sultry cassis aromas marked by bramble, black pepper, smoke and vanilla. Lavishly textured and rich, it's a hedonistic sip, with concentrated black-cherry flavors. Zesty acidity and fine-grained, gripping tannins add structure. Irresistible now for its luscious, primary fruit, it likely will develop earth and mineral intensity through 2035 and hold further still.

December 2019 (Vintage 2016)

The single vineyard 2016 Côte Rôtie Côte Blonde La Chatillonne comes from a cooler, even classic vintage for the Northern Rhône, and this shows in the wine’s elegance, medium to full body, silky tannins, and textbook aromas and flavors.

October 2018 (Vintage 2016)

Gentle bay leaf and thyme notes add nuance to a nose of black cherries in the 2016 Cote Rotie la Chatillonne Cote Blonde. Medium to full-bodied, it's supple and creamy on the palate, with a long finish marked by bitter chocolate notes.
