Château Margaux has sought to achieve excellence in its wines for over 400 years now through painstaking and necessarily long studies of its terroir, through a constant desire to learn and innovate, by remaining sensitive to demanding markets, and above all through a passionate commitment that has been shared by the families that have succeeded each other at the estate. At the end of the 17th century, it became part of the nascent elite “First Growths” – long before being established officially by the Classification of 1855. Since then, Château Margaux has known fame and fortune, seeing by experience how ephemeral both are…Today Corinne Mentzelopoulos, supported by her team led by Philippe Bascaules, and following in her father’s footsteps, devotes her time and energy to radiating her enthusiasm for this wine, whose name is synonymous with greatness, balance and harmony. The vineyard of Château Margaux covers 202 acres and is situated on soils that are mostly gravelly but also clay-limestone, and whose diversity is surely partly responsible for the complexity of the wines they produce. The first wine, Château Margaux, which makes around 1/3 of the total crop, is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (at least 85%), Merlot (between 5 and 10%) and finally Petit Verdot (around 2%) and a little Cabernet Franc (around 2%). These proportions vary of course according to the vintage, but the Cabernet Sauvignon always remains very predominant, being the “body and soul” of our wine. The pursuit of excellence has always led Château Margaux to produce a second wine, which took the name of Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux in 1908. Our demands have never ceased to strengthen and led to the creation of a third batch of wine as from 1997. Over the years, the selection has become more and more rigorous, thus improving the quality of Pavillon Rouge and consequently, that of the third wine. The exceptional quality of the 2009 vintage and our wish to take advantage of it, have enabled us to produce a third wine of a standard never previously attained. It seemed a pity to us to sell it in bulk as we had done until then… We aged it in barrels with the same care as Pavillon Rouge and bottled it after fifteen months, thus giving birth to the first vintage of Margaux du Château Margaux. Of course, the production of this wine being limited, from 2013 to 2019 Margaux du Château Margaux was at first only available in a small selection of restaurants. From 2019, the wine will be available in selected restaurant in Canada.
