Fours friends, each an expert in their respective fields got together and became the unstoppable force that is Clos des Fous. Pedro Parra, Chilean Viticultuarist and one of the few Wine Terroir Consultants in the world and Francois Massoc, one of the top oenologists in Chile are the founding members and they got together to do what nobody else in Chile was doing. Planting vineyards in extreme conditions, never previously considered good for planting vines. They were considered crazy for ignoring the recommendations and remarks by experts of where to plant and that Chile can make world class terroir driven wines. Together with Albert Cussen a mentor for the group and former Director of Concha y Toro, and Paco Leyton, oenologist and Pinot Noir pioneer, the Clos Des Fous team have crossed boundaries since starting in 2008, in more ways than one. Since 2020, Paco Leyton is the sole proprietor of Clos des Fous. Together with winemaker Felipe Cartes (a young promising winemaker, with experience in Oregon, Spain, France and Chile) they continue what the fourr crazy friends started by focusing on extreme climates and terroirs looking for grapes that show the natural mineral character in the wines with as little intervention as possible. The wines are all from three vineyard sites: Latuffa vineyard in Traiguen, Malleco DO in the cold and rainy south. The vineyard was planted in 2009, unirrigated different volcanic soils ( tuff, ashes, gravels) planted with chardonnay, pinot noir and Riesling. Biodynamic vineyard from the beginning Pucalan vineyard in the Aconcagua Costa DO, planted with pinot noir (massal selection from burgundy) over Arenaria sandy limestone soils, planted close to burgundy philosophy (10.000 plants /ha ). Grillos cantores vineyard in the Alto Cachapoal DO, 500mts above sea level on gravel with sand and silt (limestone). Planted with cabernet sauvignon. "We search for cold, clouds, rain, and old. We planted unirrigated vineyards, crazy climat, and crazy rock. we heard all the time, .. “that’s not possible… it wont ripe there..you are crazy” and that’s how we earned our name, FOUS! – Paco Leyton.
