Domaine Jean Grivot is one of Burgundy's greatest small family estates, and their story is a classic Burgundy family story. They were one of the first families in Vosne Romanee to bottle and sell their own wine, beginning in the 1930's. The estate has been run by fifth-generation vigneron Etienne Grivot since 1987 with his wife Marielle. Slightly less backward than the 2014 was at the same stage, but every bit as impressive
(or possibly even more so), this comes from two parcels of different sizes. It’s still a very youthful, vigorous wine with plenty of structure, notes of aniseed and nutmeg and a core of bramble and blueberry fruit...
Located next to Aux Brûlées, but very different in style, this is savoury and very aromatic, with notes of sage, mint and blood orange and an undertone of Asian spices. Taut and sappy with good grip and the structure to age, it needs more time in bottle to digest its tarry
tannins.
Deep red-ruby. A touch of reduction slightly mutes the extremely primary aromas of purple berries, black cherry and menthol. Then wonderfully round, spicy and sweet, in a surprisingly extroverted style, with boysenberry, black raspberry, chocolate and licorice flavors complemented by a seductive smoky quality. This impressively thick, broad wine delivers outstanding palate coverage without any undue weight. "My style," notes Grivot, who seeks to make elegant wines "with no brutality." He does two to five gentle pigeages per cuvée, more to break the berries and extend the fermentations than merely for the purposes of greater extraction. The extremely long, rising finish features plush tannins. These vines range in age from 20 to 90 years, with the average age around 50, according to Grivot.

Dark red with ruby tones. Alluring aromas of black cherry, pungent minerals and crushed stone display a medicinal reserve. Big, rich and classic, conveying superb depth to its fresh fruit and saline mineral flavors. Shows a chocolatey ripeness but this vin de terroir is as much about soil as fruit. Wonderfully pure, precise wine with broad, dusty tannins and terrific length. Lay this one down and forget about it for at least six or seven years.
