What a complex nose of white peaches, apricots and white flowers with a hint of fresh almonds. Considering the ample weight and concentration of this, it remains very straight and precise right through the long and focused finish. Only just beginning to open up. From a warm site with a very stony soil. From organically grown grapes. Matured in 50% new oak and 50% once-used oak. Drink or hold.

Generous ripeness with plenty of candied-orange character give this a lot of upfront appeal. Unashamedly full body and broad shoulders, but this also has lively acidity that balances all that very well, giving it quite some drive at the bold finish.

Lovely, bright lemon peel and ripe apple fruit, notes of marzipan and a hint of hazelnut. Despite the high elevation, the protection afforded the site brings ripeness to this superb wine. The grapes come from a hectare at the top of the slope, near Blagny. The site was planted in 1955, although parts have been replanted since. The grapes are firmly pressed, settled overnight and fermented in cask (two-thirds new) with much of the lees.

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Champ-Gain 1er Cru is quite forward on the nose: orchard fruit, orange blossom and light minerally aromas. Quite Chassagne in style. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, taut and fresh, nicely balanced with a bit of creamy oak to be absorbed on the finish, so afford this 2-3 years in bottle.

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Gain is excellent, mingling scents of citrus oil and peach with notions of freshly baked bread, hazelnuts and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, it's satiny but tensile, with a racy spine of acidity and a long, saline finish.
