Product notes

The Laborde Syrah vineyard was planted by a double massal selection of Syrah vines brought back from France´s Rhone Valley over half century ago by renowed viticulturist, Luis Laborde.

Tasting notes

Beautiful deep purple color. Aromas of cigar, leather, and smoked meat fill the nose with hints of toasty oak, forest floor and baking spice. Sweet tannins support big fruit flavors of blackberry jam, black spiced cherries with a hint of rhubarb.

2024 (Vintage 2022)

One of the best syrahs in South America today, this wine offers a refreshing, fruity take on the variety. It's still young, but it’s also deep, with delicious tones of spices and some of the variety’s classic meaty notes. On the palate it’s succulent, but the tannins and acidity are firm and the texture is tense and nervy, which helps the fruit express itself even more vigorously. This syrah is from a vineyard planted in La Consulta 54 years ago, making it rather older than your average South American syrah. It was aged in barrels for a year, 35% of which were new oak.

November 2022 (Vintage 2021)

Like other wines from the portfolio, the 2021 Laborde Double Select Syrah is fresher than its 2020 counterpart and has better definition, more depth, freshness and balance. It still has limited varietal character, but it's juicy and straightforward with a medium to full-bodied palate and polished tannins.

The Laborde selection originally came from the Rhône in the 1940s and was planted in this pergola vineyard in 1973. Dense, sweet and concentrated with a nice combination of bramble and red berry fruit, toasty 35% new oak and classic La Consulta depth and concentration.

May 2017

Serious, firm, dense and very concentrated, this doesn’t scream Syrah perhaps, but it’s still a very well made modern red that’s built to last, with damson and blackberry fruit, compact tannins and an overlay of smoky oak.

March 2012

Bright red-ruby. Smoky, slightly reduced nose offers dark berries, chocolate and a whiff of game. Lush, creamy and sweet, with dark fruit, chocolate and mineral flavors spreading out to saturate the palate. Very attractive, seamless syrah with a broad, fine-grained finish. The rootstock originally came from the Rhone Valley more than 50 years ago. After it was propagated in a single vineyard, a selection of the best vines was made for this 10-acre vineyard in the Uco Valley. A very successful vintage for this bottling.

Luis Gutierrez, March 2021 (Vintage 2019)

There were jammy notes of raspberry in the nose of the 2019 Laborde Double Select Syrah, produced with grapes from a massal selection made by Luis Laborde. It matured in French oak barrels, 35% of them new, for 12 months. It has ripe fruit and faint varietal notes of black olives and violets. It's medium-bodied, and the tannins are fine. It finishes with a faint bitter twist. 37,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2020.

October 2020

A Syrah from La Consulta, aged for 12 months in 35% new oak. Deep violet in hue, it gives off notes of smoke, cigar box, raspberry and blackberry plus remote hints of flesh and touches of caramel and coffee. Indulgent and fleshy on the palate, delivering good juice and a voluminous flow, it’s medium-bodied and slightly hollow with a smooth, flavorful profile. A New World–style wine.

Le Devoir
Jean Aubry, April 2015
