M.O.B is an exciting collaboration between three renowned Douro winemakers: Jorge Moreira (Poeira), Francisco Olazabal (Quinta do Vale Meão) and Jorge Serôdio Borges (Wine & Soul). The three friends have joined together to produce a wine to fully express the prime attributes of the Dão region - elegance and intensity. The partners are deeply passionate about the project, knowing that the true potential of the Dão has always been obscured by the high volume wines produced by large cooperatives. The trio spent time carefully searching for the perfect vineyard and in 2010 they leased the beautiful estate that was formerly known as Quinta do Corujão. Its two vineyards are situated in one of the coolest areas of the region - the foothills of the Serra da Estrela, which is the highest mountain range in continental Portugal. The poor granitic soils are extremely porous, forcing the roots of the vines to dig deep to find water and nutrients. The cool evenings in the area help to preserve acidity in the grapes. Access to water is not a problem in the Dão; in fact since rain is common during harvest rot can be a problem. Consequently the vineyards have been converted from spur to cane pruning, promoting aeration and reducing the incidence of rot, and allowing the grapes to be picked in the best possible condition at the latest possible date. The Dão produces strikingly different wines from the Douro due to the different soil and overall climate. They are generally higher in natural acidity, the tannins are less ripe, and the fruit is less sweet. These factors together produce linear wines that are fresher and more mineral driven. The M.O.B Tinto is made from Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Jaen and Baga. Each variety is vinified separately in lagares and stainless steel tanks with minimal extraction; they are blended and before aging in 30% new and 70% old barriques, producing elegantly balanced wine that perfectly express the new paradigm of ‘juicy minerality’.
