GIANNI BRUNELLI

Gianni Brunelli est issu d’une famille ancienne originaire de Montalcino. Il a consacré sa vie à défendre les traditions régionales comme la gastronomie, le bon vin et une chaleureuse hospitalité. Il est devenu célèbre en mettant ces qualités à l’honneur dans son restaurant légendaire situé à Sienne, nommé Osteria Le Logge, « où les clients sont traités comme des amis et les amis sont traités comme des dieux ». En 1988, il a rétabli la tradition familiale en cultivant la vigne à Le Chiuse de Sotto, un vignoble de 2 hectares situé au pied des collines de Montalcino. Malheureusement, Gianni Brunelli est décédé en 2008, mais sa femme, Laura, poursuit son projet. C’est une femme de grand caractère, accomplie, généreuse et chaleureuse. Il n’est pas surprenant que les Brunellos de Gianni Brunelli soient souples, exubérants et hédonistes à souhait. Comme ils sont vieillis dans de grandes cuves en chêne slovène, les vins sont élégants et ne laissent aucunement entrevoir ce côté sévère qui caractérisait jadis le Brunello. Sur le plan du style, ils se rapprochent davantage des vins classiques de la Bourgogne ou de Barolo, ce qui signifie qu’ils sont dotés d’une texture opulente et qu’ils révèlent des nuances intenses de fruits mûrs.

While looking at a map of Montalcino might place Le Chiuse di Sotto - Gianni Brunelli winery on the south hill of Montalcino, like many traditional producers, it’s a blend of their southern parcels in Podernovone and their north slope vineyards in Le Chiuse di Sotto that creates the house’s seductive style of darkly elegant yet classic Brunello. In the south, this organic producer works four hectares of vines that average around 500 meters of elevation with soils of calcareous marl and schist, while in the cooler and well-ventilated north, at around 250 meters, we find the original vineyard, planted by Gianni Brunelli in 1989. So while Podernovone brings the darker, rich fruits and body to the blend, Le Chiuse di Sotto adds the bright acidity and aromatics. The winery breaks down each of the vineyards within these locations and vinifies them separately in order to decide on the final blend for both the Brunello and Riserva from vintage to vintage.

This is one of my favorite estates in Montalcino. Under the leadership of Maria Laura Vacca Brunelli, the Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto team carefully farms diverse vineyard holdings between Podernovone and Le Chiuse di Sotto with different soil profiles, exposures and elevations. There are many promising elements to use when creating the final blend.
