Hamilton Russell Vineyards is one of South Africa’s most distinctive cool-climate estates, covering 172 hectares of striking property just inland from Walker Bay, with 52 hectares planted to vines on ancient, low-vigor soils. The maritime climate defines the style, with some vineyards planted just 1,500 meters from the cold Atlantic Ocean, imparting the chiseled tension and natural freshness that are hallmarks of the wines. The estate produces only two wines, a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir, allowing the Hemel-en-Aarde terroir to speak with clarity.

The Hamilton Russell Vineyards 2024 Hemel-en-Aarde Valley Chardonnay shows a pretty combination of orchard fruit and subtle tropical notes underscored by a clear line of salinity that carries through an energetic, mid-weight texture. The wine is 100% barrel-aged in a mix of new and neutral François Frères oak, a regimen that adds quiet structure without obscuring detail. Sourced from low-yielding vines rooted in Bokkeveld shale, the maritime influence of the nearby South Atlantic contributes a taut mineral edge and natural freshness to the finish.

Decanter, March 2025 (Vintage 2024)
The dramatic Cape Storm of 23/24 September resulted in reduced yields following uneven flowering, although the overall season was a little warmer than the cool 2023. Yields were 13.7hl/ha, with pH 3.68 and 12.75% alcohol. Yet despite all the challenges this Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir has lovely spice notes, combined with fruit ripeness, richness and very fine tannins. Long, lingering aftertaste. High class. Great aromatics.

About HAMILTON RUSSELL VINEYARDS
Hamilton Russell Vineyards – one of the most southerly wine Estates in Africa and one of the closest to the sea – pioneered viticulture and winemaking in the beautiful, cool, maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation, just behind the old fishing village of Hermanus. The Estate specialises in producing highly individual, terroir driven Pinot noir and Chardonnay, which are widely regarded as the best in South Africa and among the finest in the New World.
Owner, Anthony Hamilton Russell took over from the founder, Tim Hamilton Russell, in 1991, and bought the property from the family in 1994. Tim originally purchased the undeveloped 170 hectare property in 1975, after an exhaustive search for the most southerly site on which to make South Africa’s top cool climate wines from a selection of noble varieties. Anthony narrowed their focus to Pinot noir and Chardonnay only and registered Hamilton Russell Vineyards as an Estate, committing to work only with grapes from their terroir. Extensive soil research initiated in 1994 identified 52 hectares of stony, clay-rich, shale-derived soil as optimal for the individual, origin expressive style they aim for and all plantings have now been limited to this soil type.
Anthony with his wife Olive, winemaker Emul Ross and viticulturist Johan Montgomery are completely dedicated to expressing the personality of the Hamilton Russell Vineyards terroir in their wines. Tiny yields and intense worldwide demand keep the elegant, highly individual, Estate grown Pinot noir and Chardonnay in very short supply.
Hamilton Russell Vineyards is a WWF Conservation Champion – acknowledged as an environmental leader in the industry, for their deep commitment to conservation and sustainable farming and wine-making practices.
