About this winery

Growing grapes sustainably has always been a top priority at Grgich Hills. All vineyards are certified organic and farmed biodynamically. This agricultural philosophy treats the Earth as a living organism and uses homeopathic preparations, cosmic rhythms, and nature’s basic life forces to bring about balance between the grapevines and the Earth. Since 2006, the entire 366 vineyard acres are biodynamically farmed – the country’s largest biodynamic vineyard acreage. Grgich Hills owns five...

Product notes

In honor of Miljenko “Mike” Grgich’s 100th birthday, this remarkable vintage is dedicated to him. This rich, yet elegantly balanced wine is a wonderful tribute to his enduring legacy.

Production notes

The Yountville Cabernet Sauvignon vines were planted in 1959 to the Inglenook clone (also known as Niebaum Cabernet Sauvignon #29) on St. George rootstock. More than a half century old, these vines have developed a root system that reaches deep into the subsoil to access all the available nutrients. They produce fewer grapes at this age but more concentrated, intense flavors that express a greater depth of terroir and complexity. All of our certified organic vineyards are farmed naturally, using the principles of regenerative agriculture. The Yountville old vines Cabernet Sauvignon includes 8% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet Franc and naturally ferments using indigenous yeasts with 3-4 weeks of skin contact. The wine then spends 20 months in 100% French oak, 50% of which is new.

Tasting notes

A special edition of the Yountville Old Vine Cab bottled to celebrate Miljenko Grgich's 100th Birthday! Grown on one of the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in Napa Valley this elegant wine starts with complex aromas of brambly blackberry, rosehip, red currant, and blood orange followed by flavors of sweet cherry, blueberry, rosemary, and dry peat. The tannins are soft and round and velvety leading to a long luscious finish.

January 2022 (Vintage 2019)

Legendary winemaker Mike Grgich is winemaker emeritus here now, while his nephew, Croatian-born Ivo Jeramaz, manages day-to-day operations. Older vines supply the grapes for this vintage, commemorating Mike's 100th birthday. And what a tribute: heady dark berry aromas, grilled meat, coffee and baking spices meet succulent red and black berry preserves, tobacco, clove and violet notes. The palate is framed by striking tannins with real grip, finishing with mouthwatering acidity and a wave of brown baking spices

September 2022 (Vintage 2019)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Yountville Old Vine is flashier and more open on the nose than the 2018 version, with more obvious cedar and caramel overtones, as well as more exuberant notes of black cherries and cassis. It's medium to full-bodied, a bit plumper seeming on the palate, with a grainier feel to the tannins and a long, velvety finish.

January 2023 (Vintage 2019)

Grgich Hills farms 63 acres east of the Napanook Vineyard and crossing over to the Yountville town side of Highway 29; 25 of those acres date to 1959, planted to the Inglenook clone of cabernet on St-George rootstock. Part of the Grgich Hills Estate since 1984, farmed under organics since 2000, those 60-year-old vines produced a bright, floral cabernet in 2019, brisk and saturated with the cool feel of Yountville fruit. The tannins are open and welcoming, with some earthy grit in the finish. This has a long life ahead
