Growing grapes sustainably has always been a top priority at Grgich Hills. All vineyards are certified organic and farmed biodynamically. This agricultural philosophy treats the Earth as a living organism and uses homeopathic preparations, cosmic rhythms, and nature’s basic life forces to bring about balance between the grapevines and the Earth. Since 2006, the entire 366 vineyard acres are biodynamically farmed – the country’s largest biodynamic vineyard acreage. Grgich Hills owns five vineyards in the Napa Valley region, which spread over 366 acres: Calistoga: 34 acres of Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petite Syrah; Rutherford: 18 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot; Yountville: 63 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot; Carneros: 88 acres of Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, and Cabernet Franc; American Canyon: 163 acres of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and grape varieties used to produce Late Harvest wines. Grgich Hills Cellar was founded July 4, 1977 by Miljenko “Mike” Grgich and Austin Hills of the Hills Bros. Coffee family. Austin owned established vineyards and had an extensive business background, and Mike had just made his reputation as one of the world’s great winemakers. In the now-historic 1976 Paris Tasting, Mike’s 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay bested the top white Burgundies to win first place, shocking the international wine community. In 2007 they changed their name to Grgich Hills Estate in recognition of their wines being completely estate grown.
