Laura Catena, daughter of famous Argentine wine pioneer, Nicolas Catena, was born in Buenos Aires. At the age of 14, her family moved to Berkeley, California where her father had taken a teaching position in the Economics Department. Laura went on to attend Harvard University, where she graduated magna cum laude in biology, and then she returned to the west coast, to Stanford University, to pursue a medical degree graduating in 1992. Beautiful deep purple color. Aromas of cigar, leather, and smoked meat fill the nose with hints of toasty oak, forest floor and baking spice. Sweet tannins support big fruit flavors of blackberry jam, black spiced cherries with a hint of rhubarb. Pairs nicely with grilled or smoked meats such as beef, pork and lamb, and dishes prepared with mild cheese or wild mushrooms.
Like other wines from the portfolio, the 2021 Laborde Double Select Syrah is fresher than its 2020 counterpart and has better definition, more depth, freshness and balance. It still has limited varietal character, but it's juicy and straightforward with a medium to full-bodied palate and polished tannins.
