About this winery

Jean-Marc Brocard's origins lie in the Côte d'Or, a farmer's son from the village of Chaudenay-le-Château, not even the son of the vigneron. Following his father’s advice Jean-Marc studied Engineering leaving behind agricultural life. It was an accident of marriage that brought him to wine when he married Claudine (his childhood sweetheart), a vigneron's daughter from the village of St-Bris-le-Vineux in the valley of Yonne. Starting with single a hectare of vines from his father-in-law in...

Tim Atkin MW, January 2016 (Vintage 2014)

From a sunny, south and south-east facing spot in the Montmains lieu-dit of this left bank Premier Cru, this is one of a series of very impressive wines from the Brocards in 2014. Rich, plush and exotic, with stone fruit flavours underpinned by minerally, grapefruity acidity.

February 2017 (Vintage 2015)

This organically grown Chablis comes from the Butteaux and Les Ecueillis lieux-dits of this sunny, south and southeast facing Premier Cru. Floral, fresh pastry aromas lead into a fresh, zingy, zesty palate with subtle spice and grapefruity acidity.

December 2020 (Vintage 2019)

A slight yeasty, lactic funk plays on this wine's otherwise fresh, lemony and vivacious nose. The palate adds lots of juicy fruit, think ripe, red-cheeked Mirabelle tinged with zesty, limey greenness. Concentrated and bold, the body reveals depth underneath all this fruit, harboring coolness and verve. It's a compelling wine

This crisp, steely wine comes from the cooler left bank of the river in Chablis. It is a tight wine, strong on minerality and tangy acidity, with the steely texture that gives the ability to age.

December 2016 (Vintage 2015)

A tight, crisp wine from vineyards that face across the river to the town of Chablis. The wine has delicious yellow fruits, intense acidity and an opulent character. The vines of the vineyard face east giving warmth while keeping a strong mineral texture...

October 23 (Vintage 2021)

Montmains sits on the Serein River's left bank, on chalky soils. Its mineral rich terroir significantly impacts the wine, contributing to its stony character and floral undertones. The coolish 2021 is a saline mineral affair pitching citrus and licorice, all contained in its subtle, taut, leesy textures. It is a beautiful food wine that is only beginning its life. Oysters, anyone? Delicious

October 2021 (Vintage 2020)

An overtly floral-suffused nose presents notes of spice, ripe pear and citrus rind. The succulent and utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors possess very good vibrancy and length if not the same depth as the Côte de Léchet.

October 2022 (Vintage 2021)

Typical of Montmains, this has a sunny character, with a lick of honey from ageing in large foudres. Stone fruit and plenty of fruit ripeness here, finishing with a lick of orange zest.

August 2019

A small crop due to devasting frosts in April has left some excellent wines but in very small quantities. The Brocard Montmains is always about elegance and terroir, and it begins on the nose with the highly attractive oyster liquor, wet stone, and fresh morning seashore notes. The wine is half fermented in oak and half in stainless steel. The attack is clean and inviting with more mineral, leesy, chalky textures underpinning bright red apple and pear. Taut and linear, this will hold through 2022 but is best served over the next two years with oysters, clams, mussels or crab, all prepared simply. Delicious.

October 2023 (Vintage 2022)

Plenty of density and richness on the palate, with a ripe stone fruit character and acidity to balance. Nice sunny edge to the fruit. Should age well but you could approach this relatively early.

Antonio Galloni, January 2020 (Vintage 2018)

The 2018 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru is rich and textured in the glass, owing in part to a vinfication and aging regime that took place in equal parts tank and cask. Lemon confit, pear and lightly honeyed notes give the 2018 striking textural richness and creaminess that build straight into the racy finish. This is such an expressive and inviting wine, and a wine of great volume and depth.

Allen Meandows, October 2019 (Vintage 2018)

(from Montmains proper, one-third of which was barrel aged). A notably more floral-inflected nose displays notes of spice, wet stone, mandarin orange and reasonably abundant Chablis characters. The sleek, intense, refined and racy medium weight flavors exude evident minerality on the refreshing and saliva-inducing finale. While there is a
touch of the exotic present on the nose, overall this is a fairly classic Montmains.

Neal Martin, August 2018 (Vintage 2017)

The 2017 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru offers an impressive array of aromas on the nose: dried orange peel, oyster shell, gunflint and light Granny Smiths, all very well defined and vigorous. The palate is unapologetically classic in style with a fine bead of acidity, superb salinity with a persistent, classic finish that could only be Chablis. Excellent.

(from Montmains proper, one-third of which was barrel aged). A more elegant and notably more floral-suffused nose reflects notes of spice, white orchard fruit and lemongrass along with enough Chablis character to be convincing. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the delicious and well-detailed flavors that also conclude in a moderately dry and lingering finish where the only nit is the impression of warmth despite the low-ish alcohol level. This too should drink well on the younger side if that’s your preference.

Allen Meadows, October 2013

"A ripe, fresh and cool nose features an array of green fruit, lemon rind and sea breeze nuances. There is very good intensity to the racy, clean and well-detailed middle weight flavors that offer fine persistence as well as solid depth. This should be good with a few years of bottle age.
